Friesen Wins Michigan in Triple Overtime

(BROOKLYN, MI – JUNE 7, 2025 – RIS) Stewart Friesen parlayed an overtime restart on the inside of Grant Enfinger to win his first race since 2022. The race had three overtime restarts before coming to the checkered flag after running 14 laps beyond the scheduled distance.

Corey Heim waited patiently until the last laps of the first stage before sweeping into the lead and capturing the bonus point for leading the stage. Carson Hocevar had taken the lead from Luke Fenhaus after the first lap, with Connor Mosack leading a single lap in a quick and caution-free first stage.

Heim led the restart until lap 41. Hocevar led the middle of the second stage until a piece of paper debris caught on his grille and he waved Heim around. Heim went on to sweep both stages of the race, with Hocevar, Ty Majeski, Kaden Honeycutt and Connor Mosack ran in the top five spots.

Jack Wood spun on lap 72, tapping the wall and bringing out the first caution for an incident. After a quick stop for tires and some very slight bodywork, he continued in the race. Just after the restart, Rajah Caruth spun and backed hard into the wall, ending the race for last week’s winner. Caruth reported to his team that Matt Mills had squeezed down on him to cause the spin. Just a few laps later, Morgen Baird and Nathan Byrd spun, causing contact with the outside wall that tore a hole in the SAFER barrier. Repairs to the steel barrier brought out a red flag that lasted just under 20 minutes.

Enfinger and Crafton led the restart with Enfinger pulling away and Giovanni Ruggiero moving around into second, followed by Daniel Hemric as Crafton faded back in the field. Layne Riggs moved up within challenging range with 20 laps to go, then dropped back by a quarter of a second. Ross Chastain got around Riggs for second, then made a three-wide challenge for the lead before Enfinger retook the lead. Chastain dove around Enfinger for the lead and Hocevar moved to challenge for the second place, then took the lead and a caution came out on lap 116 for the tire carcass off of Layne Riggs’ truck after he brushed the wall a few laps earlier.

The caution allowed teams to stop for fuel, ending their mileage concerns but a lead pack scramble at the start/finish line negated the restart and took out many of the leaders, with Daniel Hemric and Corey Lajoie inheriting the lead after the pack realigned.

After the choose, Corey LaJoie and Dawson Sutton ran the front row, followed by Hemric and Jake Garcia, with Frankie Muniz and Lawless Alan in the third row for the overtime restart. Daniel Hemric’s left-front tire went down in the third turn, creating another overtime restart with Ben Rhodes racing up to second place before the yellow flag flew.

LaJoie and Garcia led the restart, followed by Enfinger and Dawson Sutton, with Ben Rhodes, Stewart Friesen, Carson Hocevar, pole-winner Luke Fenhaus, Matt Mills and Matt Crafton the rest of the top ten at the restart. The restart was initially clean but another crash on the back straight involving Matt Mills, Jack Wood and Toni Breidinger sent the field into overtime again. Carson Hocevar dropped out of the queue at the flag, earning a penalty call for not staying in line.

Friesen restarted on the inside and eased ahead of Enfinger down the back straight to take the white flag with Fenhaus and Rhodes following. Friesen went on to take the checkered flag, followed by Enfinger, Fenhaus, Rhodes and LaJoie.

“It’s tough [to make the right decision]!” said Friesen. “There’s so much going on. Obviously, at the end of this race, it got wild with different strategies. We had to be on the safe side as we fought handling all day, but we got it good when it counted. Thank you to all the race fans. This is the first place (Michigan International Speedway) I came to watch a NASCAR race with my grandfather back in the 1990s and have a lot of memories. My parents are here and that’s so awesome. Thanks to everyone at Halmar, TRD. We’ll celebrate this one for a couple days.”
