Chandler Smith Takes Late Pit Stop Tires to Last-Lap Win

(NORTH WILKESBORO, NC – MAY 17, 2025 – RIS) Corey Heim led the most laps but Chandler Smith came from a penalty at the start of the race to mount fresh tires that took him to a last-lap victory in the Window World 250 at North Wilkesboro Speedway.

Corey Heim led from the green flag until he pitted in the caution for Tyler Tomassi’s spin. Giovanni Ruggiero and Stewart Friesen ran one-two after the restart until the end of the first stage, with Ruggiero first and Heim taking second from Friesen, followed by Jake Garcia and Chandler Smith as the top five in the stage.

Grant Enfinger took advantage of a battle among the lead pack to sweep into the lead, jumping to a lead of nearly a second ahead of newcomer Brent Crews and Corey Heim. Conner Jones’ blown tire put the second stage under caution for the final few laps for Enfinger’s second stage win of the season. Heim, Chandler Smith, Tyler Ankrum and Layne Riggs following as the top five finishers.

Enfinger got out of the pits still leading, while Kyle Busch got caught speeding when entering the pits. Heim took the lead from Enfinger after the start, with Chandler Smith and then Layne Riggs getting around the stage two leader.

Tyler Tomassi suffered another flat right-front tire, causing another caution. Chandler Smith was the sole challenger in the race who pitted for tires and made good use of them to move up to second place in pursuit of Corey Heim under green.

A late caution for Brent Crews’ spin after a touch from Ben Rhodes interrupted the battle for the lead between Heim and Smith, with Smith leading at the last timing loop when the yellow flew.

Heim chose the outside line and Smith the inside, with Heim jumping into the lead, followed by Layne Riggs, who almost had a chance. Heim spun on the last lap,

Tires kind of mattered but they also didn’t. I didn’t thenk we were as good as the eleven. That last restart I did everything but the right thing,” said Smith following the race.
