Tyler Ankrum Ends Win Drought at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham

Tyler Ankrum won NASCAR's return to Rockingham

ROCKINGHAM, NC  -RIS -  McAnally-Hilgemann Racing's Tyler Ankrum saved fuel to snap a 130-race winless streak in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, visiting Victory Lane in the series' first trip to Rockingham Speedway in 12 years. With the win, Ankrum also took home the final $50,000 bonus in the Triple Truck Challenge.

On Lap 110, Ty Majeski got loose underneath Grant Enfinger in Turn 1 while trying to make a pass, then spun and backed his No. 98 ThorSport Racing Ford into the outside wall. The red flag came out for nearly 10 minutes to repair the SAFER barrier. On the following restart, Rajah Caruth’s No. 71 Spire Motorsports slid up the track in Turn 4, igniting an accident that ended the days of Stewart Friesen, Matt Mills and Tanner Gray. Friesen suffered heavy damage to the rear of his No. 52 Toyota in the wreck that brought out the race’s second red flag.

Ankrum had enough fuel to do a small burnout but ended up having to be pushed to victory lane.

Jake Garcia began the day on the pole but the race would only make it to the second lap before the caution flag came out for Connor Mosack spinning after contact with Bayley Currey. With one to go in the stage Layne Riggs would take the lead and claim the stage win.

Kaden Honeycutt would win the race off pit road after taking only two tires but he would not be able to hold off Grant Enfinger on the restart. Riggs would then move into second place. It was at this time that Corey Heim began to move up though the field. Honeycutt would retake the lead on lap 71. Ben Rhodes would pull himself behind the wall on lap 75 while Riggs retook the lead on lap 78 enroute to a second stage win.

Chandler Smith would lead the restart on lap 100 before Ty Majeski would spin after contact from Enfinger on lap 109. The two were racing for 10th. This crash resulted in a red flag for repairs to the wall in turn two. Caution would fly again on lap 118 when Rajah Caruth got loose setting off a chain reaction that saw the trucks of Stewart Freisen, Tanner Gray and Matt Mills all taking damage and being out of the race. Heim would cycle to the lead after pitstops even as his ability to make it to the end of the race was in question. Heim would pit with 29 to go as he needed fuel. When Gio Ruggiero pitted it would hand the leader to Tyler Ankrum. Riggs would stop for gas in the closing laps as Smith would run out of gas. Out front Ankrum began having fuel issues with two laps to go but managed to hang on for the checkered flag.

Next race for the NASCAR Craftsmen truck series will be in Fort Worth, TX at Texas Notor Speedway on May 2, 2025.
