Ross Chastain Wins NASCAR Cup Race at Kansas

KANSAS CITY, KS – RIS – A late pass by Ross Chastain as the laps rolled down enable the driver of the No. 1 Chevrolet to get his first win of the season. Chastain led 52 of the 267 laps in the Hollywood Casino 400, holding a 0.388-second winning margin at the end of the first race in the postseason’s Round of 12. Chastain’s first win at the 1.5-mile Kansas City track marked the fifth of his Cup Series career — his first since the 2023 season finale at Phoenix Raceway, 30 races ago.

William Byron led 24 laps and finished second in the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Martin Truex Jr. placed third, with Ryan Blaney fourth and Ty Gibbs completing the top five.
Christopher Bell started his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota from the pole position and led a race-high 121 laps. He drove on after a pair of wall scrapes — one near the end of each of the first two stages — which kept him from collecting a bigger stage-point bonus, then salvaged a seventh-place finish.

Kyle Larson, fresh from his dominating win at Bristol had trouble early. He scrubbed the outside retaining wall in the 19th lap after a tire deflated. Larson continued after multiple pit stops for repairs, eventually regaining a lost lap and finishing 26th, a far from the dominating performance last weekend and took him out of the race for the win.

When asked what he needed to catch Chastain, he was quite forthcoming.
"Just clean air," Byron told Kim Coon of NBC Sports what he was missing. "I feel like he got the restart he needed to, and I was in the second row, just trying to clear those guys. Once I got cleared of them, my balance was okay, a little bit tight. I was inching up on him, I needed for it to be a longer run being in second. Damn it, I wanted that one really bad. It just sucks, you’re so close and going to Talladega you know what that is."

Ryan Blaney finished fourth followed by Ty Gibbs, Alex Bowman and Christopher Bell in seventh after starting from the pole. Denny Hamlin, Chase Elliott and Zane Smith completed the top 10. Elliott’s ninth-place finish came after starting last because of an engine issue during practice that required the team to change the power plant for the race.
