Bowman Rallies Late in Chicago's street race to Win

CHICAGO, IL – RIS – Alex Bowman came on after the last pit stop and despite real competition from Joey hand and Tyler Reddick, held on to win the race and qualify for the NASCAR Cup series playoffs.  It was Bowman first win in 80 races.

For the second consecutive season for the race that meandered through the streets of the Windy City in which rain was forecast.  The rain was heavy at times and drivers started the race on slick tires, changed to rain tires.  At the end, several cars changed from wet to slick tires and made a run for the lead, but Bowman held them off for the victory. Bowman won the shortened race over Tyler Reddick thanks to a decision to stay out on treaded tires.

“I’m just tired of running second,” Bowman said after getting out of his car. “I don’t want to do that any more. I feel like this is the last box, aside from going and chasing the championship, that I needed personally for myself to validate my career.”

Bowman didn’t pit at the caution for the second stage and stayed out on track. He passed Joey Hand — a sports car driver making his first NASCAR start of the season — early in the third stage and then won the 58-lap race. Sunday’s race was originally scheduled for 75 laps but NASCAR announced shortly after it began that the race would end shortly after 8:20 CT.

Reddick was closing on Bowman in the final laps with slick tires on the drying track but clipped the side wall on the final lap. That contact ended any chance he had of catching Bowman for the win.

The race ended after 58 laps, short of the 75-lap distance due to impending darkness. The race was delayed by a 103-minute red flag for heavy rain

Reddick, Ty Gibbs, Joey Hand and Michael McDowell completed the top five. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Todd Gilliland, William Byron, Kyle Busch and Ryan Blaney rounded out the top 10.
