Tires Punctuate Iowa Speedway Practice

(NEWTON, IOWA – JUNE 14, 2024 – RIS) Noah Gragson topped the practice charts for the Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol at Iowa Speedway, while flat tires sent several cars into the wall in the Cup session. Corey Heim headed the Xfinity Series practice for the HyVee Parks 250.

Shane Van Gisbergen got an early lesson in racing at Iowa Speedway, slipping into the wall off of the second turn and damaging the No. 97 Chevy beyond repair at the track, going to the backup car for qualifying and the race. “I just made an error – it’s a shame,” commented SVG. “[I] Just got a little wide out of two and couldn’t bring it back down.”

In the Cup practice, tire problems seemed dominant. Ty Gibbs ran 24 laps before his right front tire went flat. A few laps later, fellow Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell’s right front tire blew, sending the car into the wall. 

The next car to have a tire deflation was the No. 1 of Ross Chastain, with the left-rear going down. Chastain stopped the car to avoid damaging the under tray and splitters, then the tow trucks couldn’t tow it back to the pits without doing damage, thanks to the construction of the Gen-7 car, leading to a protracted recovery with the car finally being lifted onto a dolly that supported both rear wheels.

NASCAR extended the practice session to allow for the long recovery effort.

Austin Cindric ran 20 laps on a set of tires before the right front went flat, sending him into the wall. Only a few minutes were left in the session when Tyler Reddick felt his right front tire losing pressure and stopped on pit road. Several teams reported that about 20 laps seemed to be the limit on wear before a problem could occur, yet Noah Gragson and Alex Bowman, both ran over 40 laps on a single set of tires and set the fastest lap times  until Ty Gibbs bumped Bowman out of second with a lap of 23.067 seconds at 136.559 mph, to Gragson’s 22.828/137.988 best lap. At the end of the session, Chastain spun at pit entry, punctuating the final few laps of the day.
