SVG Takes Sonoma Trifecta – Practice, Qualifying & Race

(SONOMA, CA – JUNE 8, 2024 – RIS) Australian Supercar champion Shane Van Gisbergen scored the trifecta of fastest in practice, winning the pole and then winning the race in his WeatherTech Chevy at Sonoma Raceway, winning his second consecutive Xfinity Series race.

Shane Van Gisbergen, winner last week on the Portland road course, led the field to the start after winning the pole for today’s Zip Buy Now Pay Later 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race, holding the lead through the first stage with Ty Gibbs chasing him. At the end of the stage, the New Zealand driver’s crew pitted him for tires and fuel after taking the stage points.

Gibbs led the entire second stage with Van Gisbergen charging to second place after restarting in eighth and making a hard charge on Jesse Love for second as the last lap of the stage ran. Cole Custer tained four positions in the pits to exit in the lead, followed by Van Gisbergen but a multi-car crash in mid-pack at Turn Two put the field under the first caution for an incident with Austin Hill leading AJ Allmendinger and Austin Green with Van Gisbergen and Sam Mayer fourth and fifth.

The cleanup after the crash had to be stretched for a long streak of oil that extended almost all the way around the track from the scene of the incident. In this restart, Van Gisbergen immediately grabbed third from Green with Hill about six lengths ahead of Allmendinger before Van Gisbergen took second place at the end of the first green flag lap. Cole Custer spun entering the final turn and sat facing oncoming traffic until he could turn and continue. Brandon Jones, Ty Gibbs, Ed Jones, Jeb Burton, Josh Williams, Kyle Weatherman, Ryan Sieg, Chandler Smith, Parker Retzlaff, Preston Pardus, Josh Bilicki and Riley Herbst were the cars reported as involved, with Gibbs’ number listed twice for some reason.

Jesse Love’s Turn 10 incident caused a brief full-course caution, with Van Gisbergen grabbing the lead from Hill entering the second turn, then Sheldon Creed locked his brakes and slid into Allmendinger dropping him back and allowing Sam Mayer and Austin Green into third and fourth at the finish.

“Man, what a race. On that last restart, I was just giving it all I had,” said ‘SVG’ at the finish.
