Mayer Takes Portland Pole

(PORTLAND, OR – JUNE 1, 2024 – RIS) Sam Mayer won his third career pole position and second in consecutive road races, beating out Shane Van Gisbergen for the top starting position by 0.044 second on the Portland International Raceway road course.

Shane Van Gisbergen headed the practice session for the Pacific Office Automation 147 at Portland International Raceway, that is, until Sam Mayer beat the Australian SuperCar champion’s time by 0.079 second with a lap of 1:14.493 at 95.204 mph. Drivers used the location of the timing line between turns eleven and twelve on the road course to accelerate to the line and give up the final turn on the track to set their best lap times.

In the first session of qualifying, AJ Allmendinger, who ran fourth in practice, spun off the turn and backed his No. 16 Chevy into the wall, doing enough damage to force the team into the backup car for the race.
