Gibbs and Wallace Race into the All-Star

Ty Gibbs pits for the soft option tires during the mid-race break

(NORTH WILKESBORO, NC – MAY 19, 2024 – RIS) Ty Gibbs led every lap of the All-Star Open to gain a slot in the NASCAR All-Star race. Bubba Wallace followed him about a half second ahead of Josh Berry to earn the second transfer slot.

Racing for one of the two positions that will transfer to the NASCAR All-Star race after the Open, Ty Gibbs and Alex Bowman led the NASCAR All-Star Open field to the green flag on a track that just 24 hours ago was under a couple of feet of water. When the rain started, Austin Dillon had set the fastest time but because all the eligible drivers had not made a qualifying attempt, the grid was determined by standings rather than time and Dillon started in fifteenth place. All the drivers started on the yellow-lettered prime tires, leaving the change to the optional tire with the red-lettered softer tread compound for later in the race.

Gibbs opened up a two-second lead over Bubba Wallace in the first 30 laps, with Austin Cindric third, Alex Bowman fourth and Chase Briscoe fifth.

A ‘competition caution’ came out on the 50th lap, with teams required to change allll four tires and giving the option to mount fresh (possibly the softer option) tires and make adjustments to the cars. All four tires must be the same, whether new primary tires or the softer optional tires. Alex Bowman gained a pair of positions in the pits. A couple of cars were caught speeding while exiting the pits, sending them to the back of the field. Dillon, Gilliland, LaJoie and Nemechek all mounted the prime tires while the rest of the field chose the optional tire.

Just after the restart, Austin Cindric got bumped into the wall by Carson Hocevar to cause the first incident caution of the race. Bubba Wallace got around Alex Bowman to move into the second transfer spot, followed by Josh Berry.

Gibbs raced into the All-Star again, like he did by finishing second in 2023, with Bubba Wallace a second and a half back in second place for the other transfer spot. Noah Gragson won the fan vote to be the wild card entry in the All-Star.
