Byron Lords Over Phoenix Cup Qualifying, Sammy Smith Grabs Xfinity Pole

(AVONDALE, AZ – NOV 4, 2023 – RIS) William Byron added a weapon to his battle for the NASCAR Cup champioinshp with the first pit stall by winning the pole position for the final race in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season. Byron, along with fellow Hendrick driver Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell from Joe Gibbs Racing and Ryan Blaney out of the Penske stables, are racing for the big trophy to end the season. Byron has won more races this year than any other driver and will have the best stall on pit road.
In qualifying for Saturday evening's Xfinity race, Sammy Smith beat out Austin Hill for the pole by only two thousandths of a second.

BJ McCleod was first on the track in the first group of Cup qualifying, chasing the car up the track and registering a lap of 29.248 seconds at 123.085 mph before Carson Hocevar went out, a lap of 27.280/131.965 resulting. Justin Haley ran next, resulting in a lap of 28.003/128.558, leading to Alex Bowman’s effort of 27.295/131.892, fifteen thousandths of a second behind Hocevar’s lap. Austin Dillon picked up five thousandths on Hocevar with his lap of 27.275/131.989. Erik Jones gave Dillon no time to enjoy the top of the chart, taking the top position with a lap of 27.151/132.592. Cole Custer, subbing for Brad Keselowski, ran a lap of 27.582/130.520, leading to Harrison Burton, who put a 27.421-second lap in the books at 131.286 mph. 

Ricky Stenhouse Jr hit the charts with a lap of 27.316/131.791 for fifth in Group A before Todd Gilliland went out and moved to second in the group at 27.205/132.329. Ty Gibbs, the first rookie to make an attempt, moved to second, at 27.181/132.445.

Kevin Harvick, making his final Cup qualifying effort, moved to the top of the group at 27.067/133.003. Bubba Wallace moved to second in the group at 27.130/132.694, the Chase Elliott made his qualifying run, hovering around making the top five but just falling short at 27.266/132.033.

Aric Almirola, who is leaving full-time competition at the end of the season, ran next, at 27.460/131.100. Joey Logano, the first Penske car, scored his lap at 27.241/132.154. William Byron, winner of the most races this season, scored the second-fastest time yet, at 27.074/132.969, with his fellow Hendrick racer, Kyle Larson, the last car in Group A, moving into fourth in the group at 27.149/132.602 to put both Hendrick Championship Four drivers in the second round of qualifying.

In Group B, hometown racer JJ Yeley hit the track first, lapping in 27.662/130.142. Ryan Newman hit the track next, immediately lapping slightly quicker than Yeley, at 27.578/130.539. Ty Dillon moved to second in his final race for Spire Motorsports with a lap of 27.602/130/406. Daniel Suarez moved to the top of the Group B chart at 27.232/132.197, leading to AJ Allmendinger’s lap of 27.599/130.440. Corey LaJoie ran a lap of 27.557/130.638 in his pursuit of finishing the 2023 season with no DNFs. Kyle Busch moved to second at 27.246/132.129 before Ryan Preece moved to No. 1 with his lap of 27.182/132.441. Michael McDowell, winner of the road course race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, scored his qualifying lap at 27.249/132.115, with Tyler Reddick, next on the track, clocking his effort at 27/182/132.441 to move to the top of the table, leading to Austin Cindric’s qualifying effort of 27.446/131.167. Ross Chastain lapped the oval at 27.106/132.812 to move to the top of the score sheet. Chase Briscoe could not run fast enough to get into the second round, with a lap of 27/444/131.176. Chris Buescher started the final five attempts in the group, running second fastest in the group at 27.129/132.699. Regular season champion Martin Truex moved to the fifth slot with a lap of 27.182/132.441, identical to Preece’s earlier time.

Denny Hamlin moved to second at 27.124/132.724 leading to the pair of drivers racing for the championship. Christopher Bell failed to make the final round of qualifying with a lap only at 27.203/132.338. Ryan Blaney also fell short of the second round of qualifying, only registering a lap of 27.218/132.265 to set up the run for the pole in Round 2.

Erik Jones was the first car on the track in the second sesson of qualifying, at a lap of 27.268/131.540, leading to Kyle Larson, the first of the two Hendrick contenders for the championship, with his lap of 27.191/132.397. Bubba Wallace hit the track next, slightly slower than Larson at 27.219/132.261. William Byron, also in the running for the championship, beat out his teammate for the first pit stall with a lap of 27.150/132.597. Kevin Harvick, winner of nine events at this track, moved to second behind Byron at 27.186/132.421, separating the two Hendrick cars. Martin Truex Jr went out next, moving to second, just eighteen thousandths behind Byron, at 27.168/132.509 before Tyler Reddick missed the line on the third turn and slapped the outside wall, . scuffing the right rear of the car. Chris Buescher went on the track next, entering a time of 27.458’/131.109 to lead to the final pair of qualifiers. Denny Hamlin ran sixth fastest at 27.244/132.139 and Ross Chastain, the final racer with a chance to bump Byron off the pole, qualified eighth at 27.458/131.109.

Sammy Smith Takes Xfinity Qualifying
(AVONDALE, AZ – NOV 4, 2023 – RIS) Sammy Smith put a big exclamation point on his rookie year in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series by winning the pole for the final race of the 2023 season. Austin Hill will start second with John Hunter Nemechek the top Playoffs qualifier starting in third position.

Timmy Hill, first out, registered an effort of 27.863/129.204 before Brad Perez smacked the wall and failed to record a time. Rajah Caruth, next out, scored a lap of 27.339/131.680, then Dawson Cram ran a lap of 27.481/131.000. Chris Hacker, the fifth car to take to the track, ran a lap at 27.787/129.557, leading to Stefan Parsons’ lap at 28.223/127.556.

Joey Gase followed Parsons, setting a time of 27.775 seconds at 129.613 mph. Kyle Sieg ran his lap at 27.611/130.383. JJ Yeley followed Sieg, running a lap of 28.157/127.855 before Leland Honeyman, subbing for Daniel Dye, who was not cleared to race after a crash in the Truck Series race last night, could only lap in 28.620 seconds at 125.786 mph.

Kyle Weatherman, the next to qualify, clocked in at 27.609/130.392 before Brennan Poole ran his one qualifying lap at 27.780/129.590. Ryan Ellis, next on the desert one-mile track, entered a 27.771/129.632 effort. Joe Graf Jr ran a 28.400/126.760 lap, leading to Jeffrey Earnhardt/s lap in 27.870 seconds at 129.171 mph. Conor Mosack, following Earnhardt on the track, moved to the top of the scoreboard with a lap of 27.308/131.830, then Ryan Sieg came within seven thousandths of a second of beating Mosack, registering a time of 27.316/131.791 to move to second on the table.

Blaine Perkins, the first rookie contender to qualify, ran his lap at 27.854/129.245, then Derek Kraus hit the track, drifting slightly and scoring. Lap of 27.638/130.255. Chandler Smith, a graduate of the Bandolero and Legend Car races, moved to the top of the chart, beating out Mosack with a lao of 27.207 seconds at 132.319, the first car over 132 mph.

Kaz Grala, another Bandolero and Legends veteran, entered a lap of 27.644/130.277 in the books, leading to Brett Moffitt’s lap of 27.580/130.529 before Jeremy Clements started fast but faded to only score a lap of 27.651/130.194. Josh Williams, racing with handprints from children all over the hood, ran his lap at 27.763/129.669. Brandon Jones came next, registering a lap of 27.583/130.515, before Parker Kligerman handed in his commentator’s microphone for the steering wheel, ran a lap of 27.787/129.557. Austin Hill moved his No. 21 Chevy to the top of the chart with a lap of 27.702/132.319. Parker Retzlaff, the third rookie to qualify, moved into the top ten with a lap of 27.399/131.392. Myatt Snider just missed the pole, running a hundredth of a second behind Hill with a lap of 27.165 seconds at 132.523 mph.

Jeb Burton ran next, next out, was about a third of a second behind Hill, at 27.509/130.866. Riley Herbst moved to fourth on the pylon at 27.306/131.839, leading to Josh Berry’s lap at 27.402/131.377 before he moves into the No. 4 car being vacated by retiring Kevin Harvick in the Cup Series.

Daniel Hemric ran next, registering a lap of 27.328/131.733 before Sheldon Creed put a 27.202 second / 132.343 mph lap in the books to slot in after Sheldon Creed. Rookie Sammy Smith, next out, moved Austin Hill off the pole by two thousandths of a second: 27.153 seconds at 132.582 mph. Sam Mayercame out next, 27.449/131.152 going in the record as his effort. Cole Custer, the next  Playoffs driver out, ran 27.762/132.052, then John Hunter Nemechek moved to third with a lap of 27.164/132.528 before Justin Allgaier, the final car to qualify, registered the eighth-fastest time of 27.274/131.994.
