Bell, Hamlin and Reddick Lead Toyota Top Three Sweep at Darlington Cup Qualifying; Nemechek Heads Xfinity Field

Bell, Hamlin and Reddick Lead Toyota Top Three Sweep at Darlington Cup Qualifying; Nemechek Heads Xfinity Field

(DARLINGTON, SC – SEP 2, 2023 – RIS) Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin and Tyler Reddick will start the Cook Out Southern 500 in the three fastest Toyotas. Hamlin will also start second in the Xfinity Series Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help A Hero 200 at NASCAR’s oldest superspeedway. The race marks the first event in 42 years that a Chevrolet has not been in the top ten at the Southern 500.

JJ Yeley was first on the track in qualifying for the Cook Out Southern 500, setting a time of 29.478 seconds at 166.823 mph, with Ryan Newman next out at 29.711/165.514, but Harrison Burton pipped Yeley’s time by a thousandth of a second and five thousandths of an mph. Ty Gibbs ran a couple of tenths quicker than Burton, at 29.192/168.457, followed on the track by BJ McLeod at 29.989/163.980. Ryan Preece, returning after his epic rollover crash last weekend at Daytona, clocked a 29.574/166.281 lap and then Ty Dillon moved into second place so far, at 29.306/167.802, with last year’s Southern 500 winner Erik Jones bumping Dillon with a 29.215/169.324 lap, then Corey LaJoie moved into third at 29.252/168.112. Aric Almirola jumped to the top of the pylon at 29.161/168.636 Ricky Stenhouse Jr put the JTG Daugherty Chevy fifth at 29.299/167.842. Kyle Larson, one of the fastest cars in practice, slotted into third at 29.200/168.411, then Kevin Harvick moved into first at 29.155/168.671 amd Ross Chastain broke the string of quick times at 29.337/167.625, with Michael McDowell  29.177/168.544 before Christopher Bell, quickest in practice, ran fastest in the group and first car into the 28-second bracket at 28.985/169.660, then William Byron only clocked the ninth-fastest lap in the session, at 29.256/168.089 before Brad Keselowski bumped Ty Gibbs out of fifth with the second-quick time so far at 29.078/169.118. 

The first car in Group 2, 20-year-old Carson Hocevar, clocked his lap at 29.154/168.677, followed by Chase Briscoe, slightly quicker at 29.034/169.374.

Austin Dillon lost time with a loose moment, slowing to a 29.410/167.208 and then birthday boy Austin Cindric ran 29.108/168.943 in spite of a loose moment in the second turn on his 25th birthday. David Gilliland set his lap of 29.452/166.970, followed by AJ Allmendinger, at 29.168/168.596 then Justin Haley’s lap of 29.447/166.998 was about three tenths slower than his teammate Daniel Suarez lapped the track in 29.236/168.204, before Alex Bowman was just out of the top five at 29.284/167.928. Ryan Blaney, after his hard crash at Daytona, ran the fastest lap so far, the first car over 170 mph, at 28.870/170.336 and Tyler Reddick immediately bettered Blaney’s time with a lap of 28.800/170.750.

Denny Hamlin became the third car into the 28-second range in this group with his 28.907/170.118 lap. Martin Truex Jr had a major wiggle in his lap, slowing to the last car in the group so far, at 29.462/166.913, then Bubba Wallace ran a 29.206/168.376 before Chase Elliott placed his car on the bubble for moving into the second round of time trials at 29.095/169.019
Joey Logano moved into the top five at 28.924/170.018. Kyle Busch bumped Briscoe out of the top five at 29.030/169.397 then Chris Buescher, the last car on the track in Round 1, managed to get into the top five of the second group, at 28.944/169.900 to move into Round 2 of qualifying.

Harvick followed Almirola, moving to first so far at 29.249/168.129. Keselowski was next out and beat Harvick’s time by 0.017, at 29.232/168.227. Almirola, the only non-Playoff entrant in the top ten, was second on the track in round two, setting a time of 29.406, 167.231; Hamlin, running after Logano, ran second to Bell, at 29.091/169.042. Blaney, next to last qualifier, could only record a lap of 29.224/168.273 before Buescher, fresh off of his win last weekend, lost speed compared to Keselowski, setting a lap of 29.278/167.962.

Bell’s lap of 29.065/169.193 was enough for first at the time, and the clocking held out as Logano ran a lap of 29.245/168.152, not enough to displace Bell.

McDowell, first off in round two, set his top-ten time of 29.290/167.893, Reddick, the final car to try to win the pole, lost a little speed off of the fourth turn, slotting into third place with a lap of 29.103/168.972, leaving the top five as Bell, Hamlin and Reddick.

“It definitely feels good. Darlington is a place that’s notoriously hard to pass, so starting up front is a really big deal,” said Bell. “But, with that being said, it’s an extremely long race. The Southern 500 is in my opinion probably harder than the Coca-Cola 600 just because of the race track that we’re at.

“We always try and qualify good, but I’ll be honest last year we qualified a lot better than what we were doing at the beginning of this year. Definitely after we got through the first probably five, eight races of this year we were wondering what happened, right? Because last year we made the final round a lot – the majority of the time and then at the beginning of this year we were really struggling. 

“Darlington is a very, very mentally taxing race track,” he added. “You have to put it up against the fence consistently and the track is very slick -- much slicker than what we have at Charlotte. The weather is going to be nice and it’s a night race so that helps a little bit, but it’s just a mentally draining place at Darlington.”

Asked about the difference between the two qualifying groups, Bell answered: “Yeah, it’s always a big advantage being in Group A whenever we come to these slick race tracks. Just because the amount of time you have cooling your tires is a really big deal. It’s been like that since the start of this qualifying format last year and its bit me plenty of times, so I’m glad I was on the opposite end of it this time.”
