Ty Gibbs Wins in the Xfinity Race at Indy's Road Course

SPEEDWAY, IN – RIS – Ty Gibbs watched favorite A.J. Allmendinger to win the first two stages and then ran away with the final run to win the NASCAR  Xfinity Series race on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  The race featured a 43-minute weather delay which made the competitors start on rain tires, but shortly thereafter, the field put on slicks to run the rest of the race.

The win was Gibbs’ first in seven Xfinity Series races this season and the 12th of his Xfinity Series career. Sam Mayer finished runner-up, with AJ Allmendinger, Austin Hill and Justin Allgaier rounding out the top five.

Gibbs started second in the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, and he took the lead on Lap 3 from pole-sitter Allmendinger. He ultimately gave it back during stage 1 as he had to pit to switch from wet-weather tires to slicks.

Allmendinger lost the lead to Gibbs on pit road during his final green flag stop. Gibbs went on to win after he built up a lead of more than seven seconds.

“Definitely about time,” Gibbs said. . “Really cool to get one here at the Brickyard. I grew up racing Go Karts in New Castle down the street, so it’s really special to me. Thank you to He Gets Us, all glory to Jesus Christ.”

“Awesome car, great car. Thank you, Jason Ratcliffe. This is the man right here. Jason did a great job. Thank you. This is just so special to me.”

Gibbs is the first driver to take the manufacturer to Victory Lane at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. Chevrolet drivers have won both Cup races at the track while Ford and Chevrolet drivers have split the previous three Xfinity races.

Gibbs now has four road course wins in his Xfinity Series career. His first was the 2021 Daytona Road Course race in what was his first career start. He then won at Watkins Glen later that season. Gibbs also won at Road America last season en route to the championship.

Recently, Allmendinger has been virtually untouchable on Indy’s 14-turn, 2.439-mile course and has finished in the top three for three consecutive Xfinity races at Indy. Last year’s win also came from the pole. This time, as Allmendinger raced again as his wife, Tara, was expecting the couple’s first child. He opted to race anyway — and made it pay off yet again by winning the first two stages before fading late and finishing more than 10 seconds off the pace at the end.
