Dover Truex Twofer as Brothers Sweep Weekend

(DOVER, DE – MAY 1, 2023 – RIS) Two tires held off four tires for the second win of the Truex brothers double at Dover Motor Speedway. After his brother Tyler won the Xfinity Series race Saturday, Martin Truex Jr added a bookend victory at Dover, matching his first career NASCAR Cup win, taking the Würth 400 just a half second ahead of Ross Chastain in the race delayed until Monday due to rain all day Sunday.

Dover Motor Speedway’s rain-delayed Würth 400 started under near-perfect weather conditions following a day of cold rain. Kyle Busch led to the competition caution on lap 20.

Josh Berry, subbing for Alex Bowman after Bowman’s injury in a dirt track race, brushed the wall early in the race. Kyle Busch, after being awarded the pole position in NASCAR’s matrix scheme for races with no qualifying, was caught speeding on pit road and dropped to the back of the field after a drive-through penalty.

Just after the restart, Noah Gragson hit the wall on the back straight for a brief caution, then a handful of laps after that restart, Daniel Suarez slapped the front straight wall and slid to the inside wall with Ty Dillon getting tapped by Kyle Busch in the accordion effect after restarting at the end of the field. BJ McLeod also spun in reaction. Dillon’s car is the first out of the race.

Brennan Poole got bumped by Ross Chastain, sending Poole sliding into the path of Kyle Larson, ending the day for Poole early. 

William Byron took Stage One, his sixth of the season and Kyle Busch lost the free pass position to Ty Dillon at the line as the green and white flag flew. 

Brad Keselowski’s pit stop featured and oddity when the right front tire, after being removed and rolled to the pit wall, bounced back in front of the No. 6 Ford and was pushed along until it rolled out from in front of the car and pirouetted back through the pit wall gap to land behind the team’s stall. Keselowski got a drive-through penalty for an uncontrolled tire.

After a series of green flag pit stops, Ross Chastain got the lead, holding it and building a cushion ahead of William Byron until he took the second stage, his fourth of the 2023 season.

Byron faded to sixth before the next round of green flag pit stops with Harrison Burton spun entering the pits and almost stymied Byron’s entry but managed to restart and move without causing a problem. When the pit stop cycle ended, Martin Truex Jr led, trying to complete a family sweep, as his brother won the Xfinity race on Saturday.

Chastain closed to less than a half second behind Truex with fewer than 50 laps to run, 

Joey Logano spun in the fourth turn after cording several right front tires, finally ending his race with only 14 laps left in the race. The lead pair pitted together, Chastain takin on four tires and Truex only taking two tires. After pit stops, Ryan Blaney and Christopher Bell between Truex and Chastain. 

Blaney pickd the inside line next to leader Truex and Chastain grabbed second with William Byron charging in fourth.

Truex carried on to capture the Würth 400, 0.505 second ahead of Chastain, who admitted he owed the Brennan Poole team and apology, saying he plans to visit the shop and make it up to them. “I have to say I’m so sorry to Brennan and everybody at Rick Ware’s team. I owe a big apology and a bit more,” he said immediately after the race.
