Ty Gibbs Wrecked Teammate Brandon Jones For the Win

Dead On Tools 250 – Xfinity Race – Martinsville, VA

MARTINSVILLE, VA  - RIS Brandon Jones won the pole for the Dead On Tools 250 Xfinity race at Martinsville Speedway, led 6 times for 98 laps, including the next to lap 268 on the 3rd overtime restart, but then Gibbs Racing teammate Ty Gibbs hit the rear of leader Brandon Jones to knock the 19 up the track leaving #54 Gibbs with the lead and the race win under a shower of boos from fans and competitors.  This was Gibbs 10th career victory in the NASCAR  Xfinity series.

Brandon Jones fell back in the field for a finishing position of 23rd and the last car on the lead lap.  Finishing 2-5 were #2 Sheldon Creed, #98 Riley Herbst, #9 Noah Gragson and #7 Justin Allgaier.

The first half of the race was relatively calm for short track racing.  In total, the race was slowed 14 times for a total of 91 laps.  The race was scdeduled for 250 laps, but 3 overtime restarts extended the raced to 269 laps.  The first 6 cautions flew within the first 200 laps and consisted of single or 2 car incidents.  2 of these 6 cautions were for stage ends.

Caution 1 was from laps 34-41 for an incident in turn 1between 68 Kris Wright, 07 Joe Graf Jr and 35. Patrick Emering. Only 07 and 35 were officially listed as involved.  Brandon Jones still led the field.

The #4 Aleve Chevrolet of Bayley Curley had contact with the front stretch wall, but no caution came out as the car continued initially without assistance to the pits.  #4 was the first car out of the race on lap 55 when towed to the garage.

Caution 2 flew from lap 62 – 70 for the end of stage 1.  Brandon Jones led laps 1-66 until relinquishing the lead to #9 Noah Gragson from laps 67-87.  Brandon ran second after the restart.

Ty Gibbs passed Jones for second and then took the lead from Gragson on lap 88 and led through lap 107. Movement on the track on lap 102 that resulted in no caution was #13 Chad Finchum going high in turn one with and apparent tire problem and he proceeded into the pits.

Caution 3 came out when #10 Landon Cassill ended up at the turn 3 wall resulting in yellow conditions from lap 107 – 112.  Cassill eventually drove to the garage area where the team raised the hood. Brandon Jones led lap 109 and then Gibbs held the lead 109-111.

When the green flag flew for the race restart, #7 Justin Allgaier was a the front ahead of Gibbs, #16 AJ Allmendinger, Noah Gragson and #48 Nicholas Sanchez. Allgaier paced the field laps 112 – 116 when Ty Gibbs retook the lead for laps 117-124 during which time caution 4 slowed the field for the end of stage 2.

On the restart #8 Josh Berry pulled away for a sizeable lead over #21 Austin Hill and Brandon Jones.  Berry led laps 125-164 Until #66 JJ Yeley got into the turn 3 wall bringing out caution 5 for laps 163-169.  On the restart, Brandon Jones was back in the lead with Ty Gibbs passing Josh Berry for second.    Jones led laps 166-177 at which point Ty Gibbs passed him for the lead.  Gibbs led laps 178-217.  Near the end of Gibb’s lead run, Caution 6 flew for laps 196-202 When #45 Howie Disavino III and #68 Kris Wright contact in turns 3 and 4, backed in the wall and then drove away.  Gibbs still led at this point until lap 217.

Until this point of the race, things had seemed relatively tame compared to many previous races.  But someone flipped a switch in the driver’s minds and things picked up.

Caution 7 flew shortly after the restart for and incident in turn 2 involving the #11 Daniel Hemric and #39 Ryan Sieg. Sieg spun in turn 2 and drove to his pits for the crew to check the tires. However, the crew pushed the 39 back from the pits and into the garage for a 33rd place finish.  Caution 7 ran laps 205-210.

Caution 8 happened quickly after the restart.  Caution flew laps 214-218 for a multi car crash exiting turn 4 involving 21 Austin Hill, 51 Jeremy Clements,  and 78 Stefan Parsons with a side shove.  The 21 pitted to clear the left tire area.  During this caution period, Noah Gragson led lap 218.

On the restart, Ty Gibbs took the lead from Gragson to proceed leading laps 219-242.   During the initial laps of the restart, multiple cars piled up and blocked the track exiting turn 4 to bring out Caution 9 for laps 221-227.  Involved were 21, 31, 35, 45, 68, 78, and 91. #21 Hill pitted, #31 got turned, #35 had to be towed and 91 pitted with steam gushing from the hood area.  Gibbs still led until lap 242.

The field went green again with 24 cars on the lead lap. Caution 10 must be brought out for laps 236-241 due to the 16 of AJ Allmendiger driving slowly around the track due to a flat tire. Gibbs was leading on lap 242 but Brandon Jones retook the lead on the restart and was credited with leading laps 243-248.

But wait, Caution 11 quickly flew for laps 244-249 due to an incident between 34, 08, and 27 in turn 4. 34 Kyle Weatherman went into the turn 4 wall. 08 Brandon Brown spun and drove away.

Now we were ready to restart at the official end of the scheduled 250 lap race. Remember earlier, Brandon Jones had passed underneath Ty Gibbs to be leading on lap 248.

#18 Sammy Smith received credit for leading lap 249.

The first overtime restart had the leaders Gibbs, Jones, and Smith (outside lane) running 3 wide entering turn 1  when #18 Sammy Smith had a left rear tire cut from contact and spun.  Caution 12 was for the spins by these 3 leaders.

Overtime restart #2 had the field reset to the last loop passed before caution.  Brandon Jones was the leader followed by Ty Gibbs.  After this restart, 1 Sam Mayer, into 7 Justin Allgaier  and 7 into 8 josh Berry.  Caution flew from laps 262-267.  To recap laps led, Gibbs led 261-266, Gragson lap 267, with Brandon Jones leading lap 268 for the third OT restart.

On the third restart, Brandon Jones led Gibbs with cars going 3 wide.  White flag is passed under and Ty Gibbs hit 19 Brandon Jones from behind entering turn 1 and wrecks his Joe Gibbs racing teammate as the 19 backs into the wall.

Boos rained down on Ty Gibbs as he did a burnout at the finish line.

The championship 4 finals are next Saturday at Phoenix.  The final four drivers are #4 Justin Allgaier, #8 Josh Berry, #9 Noah Gragson and 54 Ty Gibbs.  Gibbs was already in the chase and didn’t need to wreck anyone to get in.  He said that he wanted that famous Martinsville Grandfather clock.
