Austin Dillon Survives Daytona Enduro

(DAYTONA BEACH, FL – AUG 28, 2022 – RIS) Austin Dillon won his way into a slot in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs by winning the (twice) rain-delayed Coke Zero 400. The race originally scheduled for Saturday night started Sunday morning after storms in Daytona forced the delay. Then in the third stage, a sudden rainfall on the first turn sent most of the cars spinning before widespread rain forced a red flag that lasted over three hours. Dillon went on to win the race and a slot in the playoffs.

Kyle Larson jumped to the lead briefly but fellow Hendrick driver Chase Elliott took advantage of a better-organized lower lane to sweep into the lead with a push from Joey Logano with Christopher Bell drafting Logano. On the tenth lap of the rain-delayed race, a few raindrops started appearing in the first and second turns of the track but not enough to cause problems.

Larson reported that his water temperature was too high, started dropping back and then, with the right-hand exhaust showing mist, coasted onto pit road and to the garage with a failed engine.

At the 20th lap, Erik Jones took advantage of a push from Denny Hamlin to move the upper lane into a challenging position for the lead.

A push gone bad by Hamlin on Jones resulted in Hamlin spinning in traffic, possibly when Jones lifted off the throttle, Hamlin got tapped by Ryan Blaney and the accordion effect rippled through the front runners. Cars involved included Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Hamlin, Blaney, Bell and Jones with several others spinning and continuing. “Somebody wrecked in front of me,” commented Keselowski. “I’m not really sure exactly what happened, but there were just a bunch of cars wrecking in front of me.  I didn’t have anywhere to go and couldn’t slow down in time.”

The one-lap shootout to the end of the first stage saw Elliott leading but Truex pushed Logano to the lead, followed across the line by Elliott, Harrison Burton, Kyle Busch and Truex.

Pit strategy put Corey LaJoie and Bubba Wallace at the front of the pack for the restart with the pack spreading into a three-wide pack, allowing Erik Jones to challenge for the lead after his crew made handling adjustments to tighten the car up after he reported loose problems earlier.

Kyle Busch led at the end of the second stage, with Michael McDowell and Joey Logano leading the restart until lap 101 had a multi-car crash on the back stretch that started with Tyler Reddick and McDowell getting together, spinning McDowell into the outside wall and then across the pack into Corey LaJoie. Truex’ right front tire blew out while he slid across the paved trackside area, breaking off a large piece of the fender but no suspension damage meant he could continue the race, running well on the pace. McDowell described the incident: “I’m not really sure what happened. Obviously, we were all racing pretty hard there knowing that there’s weather coming and we’re past halfway.  I just have to go back and look at it. I don’t want to say anything silly, but felt like I had a good push from the 8 and had a run on the 22 and pulled out. I’m not sure if the 8 got me a little bit or if the 22 just blocked a little bit too hard.  It’s superspeedway racing trying to get ourselves locked into the playoffs in our Horizon Hobby Ford Mustang.

“We were going for it,” he added. “You can see the weather is right there, so it’s unfortunate.  We fought so hard to put ourselves in position to have a shot at making the playoffs.  I felt like that was our shot.  We had to go for it and it didn’t work out, but if I’d have lifted and the rain would have come and finished second, I would have been pretty upset with myself.”

Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace hooked up to push Reddick into the lead until Wallace dropped to the inside line and Alex Bowman led the top lane into the lead with help from Ricky Stenhouse Jr’s drafting, followed by Logano and Chase Briscoe.

Logano with a push from Chase Briscoe, took the lower lane into the lead but Briscoe moved to the upper lane and got loose, a touch by Bowman’s car sending him into a spin in front of the pack and almost a rollover, with several cars dodging down pit road in avoidance. Bowman couldn’t get off of Briscoe’s bumper and the mayhem resulted.

Justin Haley stayed on the track instead of pitting, hoping for a repeat of the 2019 finish and then Erik Jones and Joey Logano spun on the back straight for a seventh caution while a storm approached the track from the southwest. Crew chief Trent Owens admitted that the team did not have enough fuel on the car for the finish but hoped that the weather would shorten the race, allowing Haley to win and gain an entry into the Playoffs. Fate intervened and Haley failed to finish.

Daniel Suarez moved into the lead with a push from Aric Almirola with Denny Hamlin moving up, pushed by Daniel Hemric but a huge crash started by a sudden rainfall on the first turn involved most of the pack saw Austin Dillon escape the carnage and cross the start-finish line just as heavy rain hit the front straight. “Just no grip, the track was wet,” Haley commented later. In-car camera video showed a slight sprinkle at start/finish the lap before, then as the cars entered the first turn, a sudden rain squall that started as the cars entered the turn, leading to the mass spinning.

Austin Dillon drove to the apron, dodged the melee and drove into the lead. Kevin Harvick was scored in second, with Landon Cassill, Cody Ware, Austin Cindric, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr, BJ McLeod, David Ragan and Noah Gragson the top ten under the red flag.

“I think they’re making it up as they go” said Kevin Harvick on the leader, maintain speed, etc. rules as he explained his thoughts on whether he should have been the leader.

After a red flag period of about three hours and twenty minutes, the track had been dried and the field restarted, with numerous cars stopping in the pits immediately to try to make repairs so they can race to the finish.

The green flag flew with sixteen laps left in the regular season for Cup racing, with Truex pushing Daytona 500 winner Austin Cindric into the lead, Austin Dillon moving up to draft Cindric in second place, followed by Landon Cassill and Truex as the quartet drove away from the rest of the field.

Cole Custer blew the right front tire in the banking but got to the pits without causing a caution potentially allowing Ryan Blaney to qualify for the playoffs.

Austin Cindric almost got spun by Dillon in the first turn with four laps to run and dropped back to seventh. “There was a lot going on there,” commented Dillon after the race. “I knew that if we got to the white; I was afraid that if I waited too long, I was afraid somebody would wreck behind us, so I wanted to go ahead and get the lead. We were able to get it.

“I had a big run to him and then I had my teammate, the 8 (Tyler Reddick), back there. I knew we were in good shape there to the end. He did a good job checking up any kind of run. Just a little too much push there and got him loose.”

On the white flag lap, Dillon led his teammate Reddick to the flag for the win, gaining a slot in the playoffs, bumping Martin Truex Jr out of the playoffs by only three points. Austin Cindric recovered to place third behind the RCR pair with Landon Cassill and Noah Gragson filling the top five. “I just felt like I had good teammates,” said Dillon. “You just never give up – today we finished it off.”

Martin Truex Jr admitted that he had been “just not fast enough to keep up with those guys.”

Austin Cindric, asked about the push from Dillon, commented only “I got hit by another race car – glad I saved it – totally expected I knew I was a sitting duck – I felt like I was back in Xfinity - the only Ford out there.”
