A.J. Allmendinger Wins Again on the IMS Road Course Xfinity Race

Indianapolis Star

SPEEDWAY, IN – RIS – AJ Allmendinger held off Alex Bowman in the final laps to win the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course on Saturday.  Allmendinger has won six of the last 11 road course races — nine in his NASCAR career — and his latest victory is his third of the Xfinity season. He led early and often at his favorite track.

“God, I love this place!” Allmendinger screamed to the crowd. “Indy, baby! Let’s go!  We struggled and worked hard to get a little better. I knew Bowman was really good on long runs, so I tried to stay out there. Our car had some brake issues, as well. The guys recovered really well.”

Allmendinger and Ty Gibbs started out where they left off after qualifying, one-two, with the ‘Dinger opening up a lead of just over a second in the first lap of the race.

Parker Kligerman spun in braking and knocked Ryan Ellis into a spin and retirement with damage to the car to bring out the first caution of the race. A few cars had already suffered flat-spotted tires from brake lockup. Allmendinger had a slow tire change on his pit stop and restarted back in twelfth place while Noah Gragson and Myatt Snider led the field to the green with Gragson, Snider, Bowman, Allgaier and Herbst the first five across the line to end the first stage.

Both Monster Energy-sponsored cars got spun on the restart – first when Ty Gibbs turned in with Josh Berry inside him and again when Berry tapped Riley Herbst. A debris caution flew on the next lap for a piece of bodywork at the entry to the first turn, plus a couple of pieces of brake duct farther around the track.

Allmendinger dove inside the first turn to retake the lead on the restart, timing the restart and pass from inside the second row to a T, with Bowman following—a scene often seen on the day, but in the end, it was Allmendinger first and Bowman second.

Allmendinger led 43 of the 62 laps and beat Alex Bowman by 2.084 seconds. Bowman thanked his Hendrick Motorsports team for allowing him to race Saturday to prep for Sunday.

“We obviously struggled really badly today in the Cup car, maybe I learned something that will play out tomorrow on the racetrack,” said Bowman, who qualified 28th for the Cup race.Justin Allgaier finished third as Chevrolet swept the podium, then added one more with a fourth-place finish for Ross Chastain.

Chase Briscoe and Riley Herbst were fifth and sixth in Fords, and Ty Gibbs was the highest-finishing Toyota driver in eighth.

Noah Gragson son Stage 1 and Josh Berry won Stage 2.  Neither were a factor at the end of the race

Allmendinger, Bowman, Ross Chastain, Briscoe and Gibbs are all entered in the Cup race Sunday; Gibbs is filling-in for Kurt Busch, who is suffering from concussion-like symptoms, for a second consecutive week.

Allmendinger will go for the "Indy Sweep" on Sunday in the NASCAR Cup Series.
