Austin Hill Prevails in Atlanta Xfinity Race

HAMPTON, GA – RIS – Austin Hill held off a charging field on the last lap to win the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday. Josh Berry finished second and was followed by Ryan Truex, Tyler Reddick and Daniel Hemric.

“This is going to be so special. I can’t wait to party.” Hill said after the race.

The Georgia native had just won at his home track and he was ready to celebrate his victory with friends and family.  It was his second win of 2021 with the first being at the season opener at Daytona.

“What a car, man,” Hill said. “RCR [Richard Childress Racing] has been working their tails off to bring some very fast Chevrolet Camaros; it was a rocket ship all day. We had to make hand gestures on the side of the car to make adjustments and they did a heck of a job — they made an adjustment and didn’t need another for the rest of the race.”

It’s always special to win at the home track, and it was a great moment for the young RCR Chevy driver.

“I’ve been trying to win here a long time,” he said. “Finished second here three times in a row, twice in a truck and in the spring. It’s been owing me one and finally, we got one in Georgia. I can’t wait to party.”

Josh Berry moved to the outside on the last lap, hoping he could get by Hill, but Hill was able to get ahead enough to beat him to the finish line.  Berry finished second.

Ryan Truex finished third, while NASCAR Cup Series full-timer Tyler Reddick came home fourth. Reigning Xfinity champion Daniel Hemric finished fifth. Jr Motorsports teammates Noah Gragson and Justin Allgaier finished sixth and seventh respectively. Landon Cassil finished in eighth and Riley Herbst finished in ninth.

AJ Allmendinger had a rough day.  After running up front early in the race, He had to come back to pit after a reporter loose wheel in the race and eventually going two laps down. He was able to recover and finish in tenth.

Another big name in Ty Gibbs had trouble with less than 70 laps to go, when Riley Herbst got loose, drifted up the track, and put the No. 54 into the wall. Gibbs failed to finish after running in the top five all the afternoon.
