Allmendinger Survives to Win Xfinity Race at Portland International

PORTLAND, OR – RIS – The NASCAR Xfinity Series headed out west for a road course race and found the competitors in a race at Portland International Raceway in the rain for the most part.  Road ace A.J. Allmendinger took the lead late in the race and went on to win quite the messy event.  Allmendinger started at the rear for unapproved adjustments. He went off course before the green flag flew and slid off course another time before recovering and working his way through the field.

“It might be one of the craziest wins I’ve ever had,” Allmendinger said after the race. “Most mistakes to ever win a race for sure.”

The victory is Allmendinger’s eighth career Xfinity road course win and his third consecutive road course win in the series. The victory is Allmendinger’s 12th overall in the series and his second this year.  It was the Pacific Northwest weather that slowed everything down.  Allmendinger’s victory came in a 147.75-mile race that finished in just under 2 hours, 44 minutes and recorded eight lead changes and six leaders. He led only six laps all day. Most of the race was held in a steady rain which made racing difficult.

The win also came in NASCAR’s return to the Pacific Northwest after 22 years. The last time NASCAR made a stop in the region was in 2000.  NASCAR’s return didn’t have ideal conditions for drivers for most of Saturday. Drivers faced challenges as rain fell before and during the race, making the track slick and wet. PIR conditions improved by the final stage.

Driving a JGR Toyota, Ty Gibbs, the grandson of Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and NASCAR Hall of Fame team owner Joe Gibbs, sat atop the leaderboard after Stage 1. He fell down the leaderboard in Stage 2 and lost it to No. 31 car Myatt Snider after going off course with Sheldon Creed (car No. 2).

In Stage 3, Snider lost his lead as Allmendinger battled with him near the top.  The final stage was devoid of downpours for the most part, but racing was difficult.  It was almost, or so it seemed, that after a caution period, of which were many, proved to be a huge problem.  One observer likened it to herding cattle at the beginning of each restart, and the wrecks were many.

At least Allmendinger gets the trophy, but the next event will be just as difficult.  Allmendinger will compete in Sunday’s Cup race at World Wide Technology Racing at Gateway for Kaulig Racing.

Myatt Snider finished second. Austin Hill placed third. JR Motorsports teammates Josh Berry and Justin Allgaier completed the top five.

More than one-third of the 75-lap race was run under caution, as rain played havoc with the drivers and contributed to several multi-car incidents.
