Justin Allgaier Breaks 34-Race Winless Streak with Xfinity Win at Darlington Raceway

DARLINGTON, SC - RIS - Justin Allgaier had a rough start to begin NASCAR’s Xfinity Series race at Darlington Raceway, but it all turned out fine as he celebrated his first victory in 2022 and his first win overall in 34 races.  It all started with a dead battery before the start.

The battery had to be installed and since it was a change of equipment, he had to start at the back of the field.  He was so fast; he was in the top ten at the end of the first stage. He worked his way through the field to the lead and went on to snap that 34-race drought with his first win of the season.

The win came despite a late caution sending Allgaier and the leaders to pit road for fresh tires, leaving a handful of cars on the track with just a few laps remaining. Allgaier moved his way forward on the restart, only to see the race paused by caution again. On the final restart with two laps to go, Allgaier powered around A.J. Allmendinger to take the lead, and from there the victory. Allgaier was the defending race winner, and came away with his 17th career series victory.

“This team right here — the pit stops today were killing it,” he said. “They were awesome. This Hellman‘s Camaro was so fast. Just a testament to the 7 guys, but everybody at JR Motorsports — they‘ve been working so hard. It‘s showing with our finishes, not just our 7 team, but all of us.

“We‘ve been doing this way too long, and you know how great it feels to get back to Victory Lane.

“And by the way, it was awesome racing my teammates. That was probably the coolest part, racing my teammates all day, so hats off to those guys.”

 Noah Gragson finished in second, with Riley Herbst in third, John Hunter Nemechek in fourth, and Sam Mayer in fifth.  Landon Cassill, Georgia's Brandon Jones, Allmendinger, Daniel Hemric and Winston, Georgia's Austin Hill rounded out the unofficial top 10.

“A 1-2 finish for our company, that was great,” Gragson said. “We had great points today. Two stage wins and a second place. I wanted that win. I was ripping the top. I went on a bike ride this morning with Justin Allgaier, right at sunrise. He said, ‘Man, I’m going to run the bottom,’ and I knew he was going to run the bottom.

“We ran at the fence all day. He got the win. Hopefully, we’re selling T-shirts out on the concourse for ripping the top. I don’t know if anyone was higher than us, and there’s barely a scrape on the right side.”

Riley Herbst finished third, John Hunter Nemechek was fourth and JRM driver, Sam Mayer, rounded out the top five. Landon Cassill, Brandon Jones, AJ Allmendinger, Austin Hill and Daniel Hemric finished sixth – 10th respectively.
