TUCSON, AZ-RIS- Brady Bacon took his seventh feature of 2015 in the AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Series. It was the 15th career victory for Bacon in the series and was the 100th victory for the Hoffman stable in USAC competition. The win was a part of the Western World Championship and goes along with a second place finish on Thursdays opener to put Bacon in a good position for the finals Saturday night.
Bacon started the Friday 30 lap feature in third place behind Matt Rossi and Tracy Hines. Rossi lead early and Hines looked to take the lead when the only the only accident of the race occurred on lap 10. Cody Williams got into the turn three wall and rolled stopping the race. On the restart Hines took the lead but on the next lap Rossi was back in front.
Behind Hines Bacon was working well and on lap 13 he passed below Hines to take second. Bacon began to press Rossi and nearly took the lead on lap 16. On lap 17 the lead changed and Bacon was in charge as Rossi faded to the rear. By lap 19 Bryan Clauson was charging forward as he passed both Hines and Rossi to take second.
Further to the rear Western World round one winner Robert Ballou was working his way up from a 17th place starting position to take 6th place on lap 21. Robert had lost an engine in hot laps and had to qualify late, losing a lap and placing 20th by speed. By the 30th lap he would have 4th place. He did earn the race “Hard Charger” award for the second night in a row.
As the race came to a close Clauson closed but a last lap charge came up short and he was forced to settle for second. Tracy Hines was third.
In the preliminaries the heat winners were all from the Golden State as Ryan Bernal, Richard Vander Weerd, Austin Williams and Robert Ballou were the winners. Kevin Thomas Jr. was Semi winner and Chase Stockon set fast time at 15.446 seconds. Thomas Meseraull blew an engine during his qualifying run. Josh Hodges flipped over the wall during the second heat ending his night in the 410 sprint cars but he made up for it with a win in an accident filled USAC West Coast & South West 360 sprint car race. A lap 24 restart accident resulted in a multi-car accident with four cars flipping on the front straight.
The finals of the Western World Champion are Saturday night at USA Raceway in Tucson.
