Legendary Driver Returns With SVRA To Scene Of IMSA Success

Southlake, TX (June 29, 2018) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced that legendary Le Mans 24 champion and IndyCar veteran Geoff Brabham will serve as grand marshal for their July 26-29 Vintage Racing Festival at Portland International Raceway (PIR). The 12-turn, 1.967-mile road course was the setting for Brabham’s 1988 IMSA race win, his sixth of seven consecutive victories that year that netted him America’s most coveted sports car championship. PIR also holds a special memory for Brabham, when he made his only start for Penske Racing in the 1989 IndyCar race.

“Geoff and his family are an important part of SVRA,” said SVRA CEO Tony Parella. “His active participation as a driver in our Brickyard Invitational Indy Legends Pro-Am and even race victories at other events on our nationwide schedule is a genuine asset to the growth we have experienced.”

RACER Magazine Announces Event Sponsorship, Paul Tracy Pulls Double-Duty

Southlake, TX (June 13, 2018) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced that the field is set for the June 16 fifth annual Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am Presented by RACER Magazine at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This year’s June 14-17 Brickyard Invitational has attracted an elite gathering of top drivers, including champions of the Indianapolis 500, IndyCar, NASCAR, Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona, Trans Am, 12 Hours of Sebring, and classic short track racing with sprint cars and midgets.

SVRA - RON FELLOWS JOINS INDY LEGENDS CHARITY PRO-AM FIELD

 

Promoter’s Option Keeps Brickyard Invitational Event Fresh

Southlake, TX (June 5, 2018) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced that Canadian superstar driver Ron Fellows will join the field as a second promoter’s option for the June 16 fifth annual Indy Legends Pro-Am at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The other promoter’s option entry is NASCAR champion Bill Elliott, whose entry with legendary crew chief Ray Evernham as co-driver was filed several weeks ago.

“This event has been a tremendous success for us, but I’m looking to keep it fresh,” said Tony Parella, the CEO of SVRA. “We’ll always focus on Indy 500 veterans, but there are a lot of tremendous drivers like Ron who never had the opportunity to compete at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in high profile competition. SVRA - JOHNNY RUTHERFORD NAMED BRICKYARD INVITATIONAL GRAND MARSHAL

 

Three-Time Indy 500 Winner Returning To IMS For June 14-17 SVRA Event

Southlake, TX (May 22, 2018) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced that three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Johnny Rutherford has accepted the role of Grand Marshal for the June 14-17 Brickyard Invitational. Rutherford is the latest in a long list of Indianapolis 500 winners and Indy car champions to appear at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Fathers’ Day weekend event. Rutherford served as Grand Marshal for the SVRA’s U.S. Vintage Racing National Championships for the golden Bell Racing National Champions Helmet trophy at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) last November.

SVRA - SHORT TRACK STARS JOIN BRICKYARD INVITATIONAL AT IMS


Southlake, TX (May 17, 2018) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced that four short track stars will again compete at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the Father’s Day weekend Brickyard Invitational, June 14-17. Davey Hamilton, Johnny Parsons Jr., Jimmy Kite, and Donnie Beechler – all veterans of the Indianapolis 500 - will be on the gird at the Brickyard for the fifth running of the Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am on June 16.

“Short track racers have a special place in my heart,” said SVRA President & CEO Tony Parella.  “As a young man, I raced at dirt tracks like Weedsport, Rolling Wheels, and Canandaigua Speedway. Short track racers have a deserved reputation for car control and driving with the throttle.  With these guys, you have four of the best.”

Parsons, the son of 1950 Indianapolis 500 winner Johnnie Parsons, earned great success in his own right with 12 Indianapolis 500 starts and best finishes of fifth in 1977 and 1985. He is a highly decorated sprint and midget driver and was voted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1994. He has raced in all Brickyard Invitational Pro-Am races.

NASCAR Champs Ready For Third Try For Victory At June 16 Indy Legends Pro-Am

Southlake, TX (May 15, 2018) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced that NASCAR champions Bill Elliott and Ray Evernham are once again entered as co-drivers of a special promoter’s option entry in the fifth annual Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) on June 16. The two first entered the Fathers’ Day Weekend Saturday feature race in 2016 and finished on the podium last year. Elliott won the 2002 Brickyard 400 at IMS in dominating fashion in an Evernham-prepared Dodge.

“Both Ray and Bill have been tremendous friends to SVRA,” said Tony Parella, the CEO of SVRA. “Ray is well-known as an advocate for historic car restoration, collection, and, of course, vintage racing. I feel very fortunate to have them join us.”

Popular Driver Back For His Fifth And Final Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am At IMS On June 16

Simon, 84, has driven in every Brickyard Invitational since the 2014 inaugural event. The Pro-Am is the Saturday, June 16 feature event of the Brickyard Invitational at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“The Brickyard Invitational has given me a chance to extend my career in a very enjoyable way,” said Simon. “It’s always special to come back to Indy and this racing has brought me a ton of fun. 2015 “Indy Legends” Charity Pro-Am Champ Bob Lazier and Son Jaques Back At IMS

Southlake, TX (May 1, 2018) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced that Bob Lazier, the 2015 winner of the “Indy Legends” Charity Pro-Am, will return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the June 16 feature race of the Brickyard Invitational. Jaques Lazier has also entered the contest joining his father during the Father’s Day weekend event, June 14-17. This will be the fifth consecutive Brickyard Invitational for both Laziers, who have competed since the inaugural event in 2014.

Daytona 24 Champs To Return To IMS For June 14-17 Brickyard Invitational

Southlake, TX (April 24, 2018) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced Mark Dismore and Max Papis, both former winners at the prestigious 24 Hours of Daytona, will again be among the field of Indy 500 veterans at the June 16 Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am. That race is the Saturday feature of the Fathers’ Day Weekend Brickyard Invitational at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Four-Time Indy 500 Champion At May 31-June 3 Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival

Indy Car Champions To Tackle June 16 Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am At IMS

Southlake, TX (April 10, 2018) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced that 1996 Indy Car Champion Jimmy Vasser and 2003 Indy Car Champion Paul Tracy will once again compete in the “Indy Legends” Charity Pro-Am at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). Tracy, who won the event in 2016, is returning for his third go at what is arguably the biggest prize in vintage racing. Vasser is coming back for his second stab at victory after making his first appearance last year. The Pro-Am is the Saturday, June 16 feature event of the Brickyard Invitational at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Both Tracy and Vasser are among the major talents of modern Indy car racing. Tracy is a seven-time starter in the Indianapolis 500 with a best finish of second in 2002 in a controversial result that still has bench-racers debating the outcome. Vasser competed in eight Indianapolis 500s, recording two fourths in 1994 and 2001 for his best showings.

SVRA - AL UNSER JR. NAMED SVRA GRAND MARSHAL AT SEBRING – March 1-4

Two-Time Indy 500 Champion Returns to Famed Airport Course

Southlake, TX (February 13, 2018) – Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced that Al Unser Jr. will be their first grand marshal for the 2018 season when America’s premier vintage racing organization presents their March 1-4 Sebring Vintage Classic at the iconic airport course. In addition to ceremonial duties, Unser will speak to the SVRA membership at a Saturday night banquet.

Unser competed in three Sebring 12-Hour races, finishing on the podium twice. In 1985 the versatile driver was second overall and followed that up with a third-place finish in 1986.

SVRA - SVRA ANNOUNCES “OTTO LINTON SPIRIT OF VINTAGE RACING” AWARD

 

Trophy Recognizes Vintage Racers Exemplifying Sports Car Legend’s Sportsmanship

Southlake, TX (January 18, 2018) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) announced today that it would present a trophy to the vintage racer who best lives the values of legendary sports car racer Otto Linton at the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix in September. That weekend celebration takes place at Watkins Glen International Raceway. Linton is already commemorated on the famous Watkins Glen Village’s “Walk of Fame” at the start-finish of the original public roads race course. Linton, the last living driver entered in the first Watkins Glen Grand Prix in 1948, passed away on January 3rd. Born in 1917, he was 100 years old.

Racing’s Earliest Days Honored As Events Span Over 100 Years Of History

Southlake, TX (December 20, 2017) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) announced today a collaboration with Hagerty, a company for people who love cars, and the Blain Motorsports Foundation to produce a new, strictly exhibition series of three races dedicated to cars up to and through World War I. The events will be staged at SVRA weekends at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), Sonoma Raceway, and Watkins Glen International Raceway.

SVRA - SVRA ANNOUNCES B-SEDAN NATIONAL, REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

 

“B-Sedan Challenge Series” Response To Popular Request Of Car Owners

Southlake, TX (November 16, 2017) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) announced today a new B-Sedan Challenge Series in response to the large number of requests to showcase the popular car class. The goal is to provide a series with close, competitive racing for small bore sedans that competed from January 1966 to October 1979 in SCCA B-Sedan and the IMSA 2.5 Challenge Series. The new championships will be at both the national and regional level. Champions will be crowned at COTA during the season-ending U.S. Vintage National Championships, November 1-4, 2018.

This is also how we live the spirit of vintage racing and reach out to vintage clubs across America. SVRA - New Entry Point For Vintage Racers Expands To Seven SVRA Weekends

 

Southlake, TX (October 19, 2017) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) and Mazda, one of the most formidable manufacturer brands in all motorsports, announced that the popular Mazda Miata Heritage Cup championship will return for a second season in 2018. The cars are first generation 1.6 to 1.8-liter spec Miatas of 1990 to 1997 vintage and will compete in a six-race points championship with an additional non-championship event at the October 5-7 “Slaying the Dragon” Hill Climb in Robbinsville, North Carolina.

America’s Premier Vintage Racing Series to Join Trans Am at Classic Road Racing Venue

Southlake, TX (October 12, 2017) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today revised its 14-race weekend schedule for 2018 to accommodate a recent opportunity to join the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli at historic Road Atlanta Raceway, considered by many to be one of the greatest road racing venues in the United States. The event will begin with qualifying on Thursday, March 29 with racing on Friday and Saturday, March 30 & 31.

NASCAR Champs Take On 33 Indy 500 Veterans In June 17 Indy Legends Pro-Am

Southlake, TX (June 6, 2017) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced that NASCAR champions Bill Elliott and Ray Evernham are once again entered as co-drivers of the special “Garage 34” entry in the Indy Legends Charity Pro-Am at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) on June 17. The two entered the Fathers’ Day Weekend Saturday feature race for the first time last year. Elliott won the 2002 Brickyard 400 at IMS in dominating fashion in an Evernham-prepared Dodge.

“Ray Evernham has grown to become a tremendous friend and enthusiast for our brand of racing. Legendary Driver Returns To The Scene Of His First Trans Am Victory, July 27-30

Southlake, TX (June 27, 2017) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced that Willy T. Ribbs, who made history as the first black driver to qualify for the Indianapolis 500, will serve as grand marshal for their July 27-30 Vintage Racing Festival at Portland International Raceway (PIR). The 12-turn, 1.967-mile road course was the setting for Ribbs’ first victory in 1983 during the halcyon days of the Trans Am series. The PIR triumph kicked off a streak of 19 career wins, making Ribbs the most prolific Trans-Am winner of the mid-1980’s.

John Martin, Dennis Firestone Also Add Experience to June 17 Indy Legends Pro-Am Field

Southlake, TX (May 9, 2017) – The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced the return of drivers Roberto Guerrero, John Martin and Dennis Firestone to the Fathers’ Day Weekend Indy Legends Pro-Am at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The three drivers bring the list of entries to 28.

“Roberto is no stranger to our events as he is a big part of Jaguar’s sponsorship of our series, but it’s special when he actually competes wheel-to-wheel in a race this important,” said SVRA President and CEO Tony Parella. “Roberto’s career speaks for itself with remarkable accomplishments in Indy car as well as the opportunity to race in the elite Formula One World Championship.”

Guerrero raced in 15 Indianapolis 500s beginning with his rookie-of-the-year performance in finishing second in 1984. He also won the series rookie-of-the-year award the same year. He finished second in the 1987 Indy 500 after leading late in the race. A delay in the pits dropped him behind eventual winner Al Unser. In his first four “500’s” Guerrero never finished out of the top four. He set the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track record in 1992 at 232.482 mph, the first driver to win the pole with a speed over 230.
