INDIANAPOLIS (May 18, 2018) – Sixteen Chevrolet drivers prepped for the first day of qualifications for the 102nd Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil by attempting to find clean air for qualifying simulations during practice today on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.

Lap speeds climbed as the boost level was increased to 1.4 bar on the twin turbocharger of the Chevrolet 2.2-liter V6 direct-injected engine. The change in boost pressure, which adds about 40 horsepower, will remain in place through the two days of qualifications.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 18, 2018) – “Fast Friday” once again lived up to its name today at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the Honda duo of Marco Andretti and Robert Wickens claimed the top two positions on the speed chart in the final full day of practice prior to qualifying for the Indianapolis 500.

With turbocharger boost turned up to the higher, qualifying level permitted by series rules, Honda drivers claimed four of the six fastest speeds positions on the day, and six of the top 10.  In a one-off appearance for the Scuderia Corsa/Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing effort, veteran Oriol Servia ended the day fourth, joining Andretti, Wickens and Ed Carpenter with laps above 230 miles per hour.

All 16 Chevy Racing drivers logged laps during the seven hours of available track time that was briefly interrupted with 20 minutes left when the No. 66 Salesforce DRR Chevrolet driven by JR Hildebrand make light right-side contact with the SAFER Barrier between Turns 3 and 4. He was checked at the infield medical center and cleared to drive.

Howard, Dixon Head Honda Attack as Indianapolis 500 Practice Opens

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 15, 2018) – Returning veteran Jay Howard led the way for Honda Tuesday in Opening Day practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in preparation for the May 27 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500. 

Joining the Honda-powered Schmidt Peterson Motorsports effort again this year in a one-off effort, Howard posted a best lap speed of 224.518 miles per hour in warm and humid conditions during the second of two full-field practice sessions today.  Marco Andretti led the way for Honda in the opening practice, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., and finished the day sixth overall.

Scott Dixon, pole qualifier for last year’s “500”, slotted in between Howard and Andretti on the speed chart, fifth.  In all, 34 of the 35 drivers in the field took to the 2.5-mile oval today in an incident-free day halted for 30 minutes by a passing rain shower just after 4 p.m. 

Practice activities continue through Friday, with qualifying action to set the field of 33 on the historic 2.5-mile oval scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

INDIANAPOLIS (May 15, 2018) – With a baseline set, Chevrolet Verizon IndyCar Series (VICS) teams and drivers can look forward to reaching loftier goals at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Developing a familiarity with the new universal aerodynamic bodywork in traffic and long stints on the 2.5-mile oval was Team Chevy’s objective on the first day of practice for the 102nd Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil.

Fifteen Team Chevy competitors logged laps behind the wheel of the Dallara chassis powered by the 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged direct-injected V6 Chevrolet engine. Overall, 35 entries completed 2,066 laps without incident.

Simon Pagenaud, driving the No. 22 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet, recorded the fastest lap at 225.787 mph/39.8605 seconds as segments for rookie orientation, veteran refresher, and all entries were built into the initial seven hours of available track time.

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves was second on the time sheet with a best lap of 224.665 mph/40.0597 seconds in the No. 3 Pennzoil Team Penske Chevrolet. Team owner/driver and two-time Indy 500 pole winner Ed Carpenter, driving the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet, was third fast at 224.523 mph/40.0850.

Danica Patrick, driving the No. 13 GoDaddy Chevrolet for Ed Carpenter Racing, turned 91 laps with a best of 222.728 mph in her return to the Verizon IndyCar Series for the final race of her career.

ST. PETERSBURG  (MARCH 11, 2018)  -  Defending Verizon IndyCar Series champion Josef Newgarden (No. 1 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet) led the 11-car Chevrolet 2.2 liter twin turbocharged direct injected V6 contingent in today’s opening race for the Verizon IndyCar Series with a seventh place finish.

It was a wild race that saw 11 caution flags for a total of 25 of the 110-lap Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit.  On the first lap, Team Chevy contenders Will Power (No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet)  and Tony Kanaan (No. 14 ABC Supply AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet) were caught up in incidents that sent them to pit lane for repairs. The two veteran drivers fought hard and recovered to finish 10th and 11th respectively.

The race finished under a yellow flag as the leaders collided coming to the white flag. St. Petersburg resident Sebastien Bourdais (Honda) won the race for the second consecutive year.
