Creed Works Overtime in Texas Trucks

Sheldon Creed added another winner's sticker at Texas

(FORT WORTH, TX - OCT 25, 2020 - RIS) Sheldon Creed captured his fourth Gander RV & Outdoors NASCAR Truck Series win, dominating the race by leading 132 of the 152 laps and ending the race under an overtime caution when Josh Bilicki and Ben Rhodes spun in the second turn. the win ensured Creed of a shot at the championship in the final race of the season at Phoenix.

A fresh application of PJ1 traction compound overnight may have changed some teams' early plans for the Speedy Cash 400 Sunday, but pole sitter Sheldon Creed and second starter Austin Hill still pulled out to lead the pack as the field strung out single file almost immediately. Creed led every lap until the caution three laps before Stage One end for TIm Viens' flat right front tire and impact in the wall.

Stage Two ran only two laps before Clay Greenfield's hard crash into the outer and then inner walls of Turn Four, following a hit from Tyler Hill when Hill's truck got loose and tapped Greenfield's. Greenfield wound up with the driver's side against the inner wall, which slowed his exit from the truck, in spite of being uninjured by the impacts. The oil streak across Turn Four's banking put the track under a short red flag for cleanup. Only seven laps later, Tate Fogleman tried to knock down the Turn Four wall to bring out another caution with Creed still leading.

At the restart, Creed failed to pull away from Matt Crafton as easily as he had oupaced the field earlier, with Crafton's challenge sweeping low and into the lead with six laps before the end of the second stage. Three-time series champion Crafton took his first 2020 stage win, heading the field over Creed, Ben Rhodes, Zane Smith and Derek Kraus.

Creed got a good start to retake the lead from Crafton with Christian Eckes and Ben Rhodes the next pair.

Grant Enfinger's chances of moving into the group of four took a blow when his race ended in a cloud of smoke to cause another caution. Enfinger commented that "it just wasn't meant to be today," describing the failure as probably the same thing that happened to them at Las Vegas last year. A few teams used this caution to add some fuel but most stayed out. Creed and Eckes took the pack under the flag to restart the race, with Kraus and Rhodes ahead of Crafton in the top five but Crafton took only a couple of laps to get back into second place. Todd Gilliland and Ben Rhodes side-drafted with Gilliland losing the handle and backing hard into the Turn One outside wall for caution seven.

Stewart Friesen led briefly at the restart but Creed wasted no time in retaking the first position with a caution flying when CHandler Smith backed into the outside wall after he blamed Tanner Gray for contact. Smith's crew failed to tighten the left rear wheel and it fell off the truck to send the No. 51 back to the pits.

Creed again led under the green flat, followed by Friesen but Moffitt took second in less than a lap. Friesen got the lead, followed by Johnny Sauter with Creed, Moffitt and Austin Hill the top five at twenty laps to run, but a side draft by Sauter ended in a crash by Friesen. Sauter got loose and tapped Frisen, carrying the pair into the outside wall with Frisen's truck damaged beyond continuing but Sauter stayed on the track. The crash moved Creed, Moffitt and Austin Hill to the top three positions, followed by Rhodes and Crafton.

Creed and Austin Hill headed the pack at the restart but Ben Rhodes took second place, looking for a win to advance to the final round of the Playoffs. Rhodes looked outside but lost momentum and fell back to fourth. Hill and Creed ran one-two with Eckes a cushion between them and Rhodes until Rhodes easily got around and back to third place.

Lapped traffic made Creed move high, allowing Hill into the lead but Rhodes hit Eckes entering the front straight, sending Eckes hard into the wall and bringing about an overtime finish.

Creed chose the inside line for the restart with his teammate Brett Moffitt behind him and Austin Hill on the outside of the first row approaching the green-white-checker overtime.

A push by Moffitt entering the fourth turn moved Creed into the lead as a crash in turn two brought out the yellow as the checkered flag flew.

Ben Rhodes commendted that: "the guy runs me out of the groove - he almost put me in the wall," saying that the incident was caused by his trying to avoid hitting the wall, not retaliation.
