Harrison Burton Wins the Texas Playoff Race in the Final Turn

FORT WORTH, TX – RIS – Harrison Burton passed Noah Gragson on the final turn of the last lap to punch is ticket to the next round of  the Xfinity Series race at Texas Motor Speedway and went on to the win with seconds to spare. Gragson took the lead on the final restart but Burton, who spun earlier in the race, chased him down and scored his third win of the season.

“We had such a fast race car,” Burton told NBCSN. “I’ve never driven anything harder than that last corner in my life.”

Gragson entered the race last among the eight remaining playoff drivers and appeared to be in a must-“I felt like we had a fast car there, a little tight on exit all day, just frustrated at myself,” Gragson said. “I was pretty tight there at the end. I saw (Anthony) Alfredo holding Harrison off. … I knew (Burton) was coming. I just didn’t expect him to get there. Frustrated.” Instead of securing a spot in the championship race, Gragson is 24 points from the final transfer spot going into next week’s race at Martinsville, the final chance to secure a spot in the title race.

Justin Haley holds the top situation to advance. He seemed set to do just that.

Anthony Alfredo, Austin Cindric and Brandon Brown completed the top-five finishing order.

A significant shakeup on the cutline occurred when playoff drivers Ross Chastain, Justin Allgaier and Brandon Jones crashed on the backstretch following a restart with 25 laps remaining. Allgaier got loose at the exit of Turn 2 trying to take the lead away from Chastain. That bunched cars up, with Chastain hitting the car of Allgaier and collecting Jones. Allgaier and Jones were forced to retire from the race. Jones finished 25th, while Allgaier finished right behind in 26th. Chastain finished 16th.

Early-race problems plagued Chase Briscoe, who advanced into the Championship 4 with his victory at Kansas Speedway. Briscoe came to pit road under green-flag conditions for a flat right-rear tire, but the issues proved to be more severe. Briscoe took the No. 98 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford to the garage for repairs after the team discovered a broken shock, returning to the track several laps down.

Ryan Sieg, who came into Texas 17 points below the cutline, also suffered mechanical issues. Sieg took the No. 39 Chevrolet behind the wall on Lap 55, returning to the track multiple laps down. He finished 31st.

Next for the NASCAR Xfinity drivers is the paper clip at Martinsville, Virginia.  Most drivers have not seen or raced on the half-mile flat track with the concrete turns.  Some have run the track in Gander Outdoors Truck series.
