Chase Briscoe Wins at Las Vegas for the Second Time in 2020

LAS VEGAS, NV – Chase Briscoe more than dominated the ALSCO 300 Xfinity Series Saturday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  Briscoe led 164 of the 200 laps to win in the Xfinity Series for the second straight week. The triumph was also his second consecutive win at the 1.5-mile Nevada track, giving him an even 10 wins for his Xfinity career.

Noah Gragson finished second, with his JR Motorsports No. 9 Chevrolet finishing 1.370 seconds behind Briscoe’s No. 98 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford at the checkered flag. Daniel Hemric claimed third place, just ahead of Justin Allgaier in fourth and Ryan Sieg, who closed out the top five.

Briscoe had said as the season started if he could win eight races in 2021, it should be enough for him to get a NASCAR Cup Series ride.  Having achieved the eighth win tonight, and with no apparent ride in Cup available, his dominating performance had to impress many car owners.

Briscoe started from the pole position and won the first two stages to add a pair of playoff points to his stockpile for the seven-race postseason.

Ross Chastain led the next-most laps, putting his Kaulig Racing No. 10 Chevrolet out front for 15 laps. Chastain continued after a significant scrape of the Turn 4 retaining wall with two laps left in Stage 1 and finished 16th, last among the 12 playoff-eligible drivers.

Briscoe earned an automatic berth into the second round of the playoffs and increased his series-best victory total. There will be a new Xfinity Series champion for the first time in three years this season and Briscoe is one of the favorites.

“An incredible car by everybody at Stewart-Haas. That made my job way too easy, honestly," Briscoe said. “We have had a lot of wins this year, but this is by far our most dominant car.”

Briscoe joined Jack Ingram and Sam Ard with a record eight wins; both Ingram and Ard won eight apiece in 1984. He also won last week at Bristol.  He’s probably not done with six races remaining in the season, either.

“I knew this team was fully capable of achieving that and even more," Briscoe said. “It has been an unbelievable season and we still have a lot, six more wins that we can try to get and a championship. That is what we are going to try to do.”

The winning moment came when Briscoe, who had stopped earlier for tires and running behind Gregson, restated, and found himself in the front row for the restart.  It only took him a lap to gain the lead and go on to victory.

Austin Cindric, the regular season champion, didn't have as strong of a Ford as Briscoe, but still was running second before the final caution. Team Penske told him he should do the opposite strategy as Briscoe but the let Cindric make the final decision. Cindric followed Briscoe down pit road for the service but a slow stop cost him four positions. Cindric finished sixth.

“Frustrated, man, I definitely don't believe we deserved to finish where we did,” Cindric said.

Next week, the Xfinity cars head to Talladega Super Speedway for the second race on the 2.66-mile-high banked oval.
