Zane Smith Last Lap Truck Winner at Michigan

(BROOKLYN, MI - AUG 7, 2020 - RIS) Zane Smith led his first green flag laps of the season tonight at Michigan International Speedway's Henry Ford Health System 200, but it was the most important lap of the event: the last one for the checkered flag. Multiple overtime restarts led to contact between leader Grant Enfinger and challenging Austin Hill with Smith taking the lead on the last lap.

At the race's start, Brett Moffitt stole the lead from Chandler Smith, who dropped back almost out of the top ten on the first lap. Christian Eckes Ben Rhodes, Derek Kraus and Austin Hill were the top five after the first lap. Josh Reaume and Trey Hutchens collided entering the front stretch on lap four to bring out the first caution and the first opportunity for drivers to try their hand at picking the correct lane instead of the position determined by running order.

Christian Eckes picked the inside lane, moving into second on the restart with Brett Moffitt on his right. Lap 8 started on the restart, with Ben Rhodes challenging for the lead, then dropping back to second with Eckes looking inside before spinning on the back straight after Austin Hill's truck 'stole the air' with eight laps left in the first stage.

The race restarted with three to go in the stage, Moffitt leading with Sheldon Creed second and Brennan Poole looped in the fourth turn to bring out an immediate caution, but like Eckes, didn't hit anything. "I don't know what happened, it just snapped around," he reported.

Moffitt led across the line to 'win' the first stage under caution. Johnny Sauter easily took the second stage over Moffitt, Todd Gilliland, Grant Enfinger and past NHRA Pro Stock champion Tanner Gray.

Todd Gilliland and Austin Hill headed the field at the restart, with Hill taking the lead while Johnny Sauter challenged briefly then Enfinger got third while contact between Friesen and Eckes caught Matt Crafton with no escape route but little damage to the No. 88 Ford.

Sheldon Creed took the lead from Austin Hill on the restart with Chandler Smith getting spun by a push from Ben Rhodes, sending the field down pit road again for service.

Johnny Sauter picked the outside line while John Hunter Nemechek picked the inside with Nemechek easing into the lead. Sauter bobbled trying to pass for the lead and Enfinger moved around into second and then took the lead from Nemechek.

Austin Wayne Self spun and hit the wall to bring out another caution with less than 30 laps left in the 100-lap event.

Enfinger and Sauter led at the green, opening up over a second lead ahead of third place Sheldon Creed and Austin Hill.

Johnny Sauter's attempted pass for the lead left him against the outside wall after losing the aerodynamics and touching the apron. Tanner Gray picked the inside line for the restart, with John Hunter Nemechek behind him. Gray lost numerous positions before Ray Ciccarelli spun and stalled on the back straight for another shot at the choose. Nemechek picked low, starting next to Enfinger with Creed and Hill behind him, while Nemehek's 'pusher' was Tanner Gray.

Six laps scheduled to run at the restart and Nemechek held onto secodn briefly before Austin Hill got the short end of a three-wide on the front straight to bring out the tenth caution, setting a race record for yellows and creating an overtime finish.

Nemechek picked the inside line, with Rafael Lessard behind him, while Enfinger, Creed and Austin Hill were in front of the outside line. Once again, a caution and short red flag for an oil cleanup in the fourth turn after Jeb Burton, Brennan Poole and Matt Crafton got involved on the back straight. Sheldon Creed's truck had a battery problem, sending him coasting to the pits. Just under ten minutes for the cleanup and the field followed Enfinger to another choose and restart with Nemechek going low and Austin Hill slotting in behind the leader.

Hill looked low to pass but Enfinger moved to block him, spinning both trucks with no caution resulting. Trey Hutchens spun on the back straight without hitting anything or bringing the caution out, then Zane Smith moved on to take his career first victory with Eckes second, ex-NHRA Pro Stock racer Gray third, Tyler Ankrum fourth and Todd Gilliland fifth.

"I don't even know where to start - they tried to take another one from me with the flat right rear, coming to the green leading," said an emotional winner. "Just an unbelievable day.
"A lot of people don't understand my situation with racing, it's just unbelievable I've made it to this point. A lot of this sport, as we all know, is money and I don't come from that. To make it to this point and win and be with such an awesome team is something special."
