Brandon Jones Passes Kyle Busch for Phoenix Xfinity Win

AVONDALE, AZ - RIS - Brandon Jones passed Kyle Busch with 20 laps to go and held on to win Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Phoenix Raceway. It was Jones’ second career win in 141 Xfinity starts. His previous win came last October at Kansas.

Busch started from the pole and sought his 12th career Xfinity win at Phoenix. It appeared that he was headed toward that goal, leading a race-high 78 laps, but trailed off in the final 20 laps. Not only did Jones pass him for the lead, last week’s winner at Fontana, Harrison Burton, also got past Busch and finished runner-up Saturday. it was a 1-2-3 finish for Joe Gibbs Racing.

“I could not believe (Busch) left the bottom (lane) open. We were so strong on that top lane,” said Jones, whose victory is the 500th in NASCAR’s three national series for Toyota Racing. “Toyota is the manufacturer to be with – I love them so much.

“My stats were obvious,” Jones said. “I’ve been in the series for a while now. Up until Kansas, it’s been a lot of up and just could never close the final laps in a bunch of races.

“So to finally see it could come together and win a race, that added a lot of hope coming into this year.”

Now he has some results to go along with that hope in a season where JGR doesn’t have a driver that many people would point to as a championship favorite. Now both of its young drivers – Burton, who won last week at Fontana, and Jones both have wins.

Jones is the oldest of the young JGR drivers and is considered a leader of the team, and whether he ends up becoming a championship contender likely will require more wins and more consistency. It would be a big leap after four seasons where he finished 10th, 16th, 9th and 10th in the standings, respectively.

Harrison Burton finished second. Busch ended up third, Brad Keselowski was fourth and Justin Haley completed the top-five.
