Kyle Busch Wins the Ford Ecoboost 400 to Claim the 2019 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup

HOMESTEAD, FL – RIS- Kyle Busch won the Ford Ecoboost 400 going away at Miami-Homestead Speedway on Sunday and won the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Championship for the second time.  He was aided by his two teammates, and they had problems.  Martin Truex, Jr had to make an early pit stop because the wrong tires were installed, and Denny Hamlin for overheating in the final stage. Kevin Harvick, who had the only non-Toyota in the final four, finished fourth.

“We had a really good car, and I could race around and move around,” Busch said after his fifth win of the 2019 season and the 56th of his Cup career, moving him into ninth on the all-time list.

Denny Hamlin, Toyota’s third driver fighting for the championship, finished 10th, while Stewart-Haas Racing contender Kevin Harvick was fourth.

“You race against these guys, and it really turns into individual battles,” Harvick said when asked if he felt outnumbered. “Those guys were all racing for each other and trying to win a championship.”

Busch had accumulated wins and playoff points early in the season, so that allowed to get to the final four drivers to race for the championship.  Before tonight, Busch had a losing streak of 21 races.  That same hot start allowed them to win the regular season championship.

There’s always your doubters,” Busch said. “There’s always your haters. This one is for Rowdy Nation.” And it was.

One cannot dispute the driver of the No. 18 Toyota’s skill, and yet he hadn’t won during the playoffs while his teammates and Harvick won.  He turned it all around by having a flawless race, and with the earlier mentioned pit trouble of his teammates mentioned earlier, he couldn’t be headed in the final laps.

Denny Hamlin’s hope of finally winning his first career Cup title ended late in the race when his car was saddled with overheating problems when his team applied too much tape to his front.  The argabl6y best car (along with Truex) finished third.

Erik Jones had his best finish since his Darlington win and his 10th top five in 2019, the most in a season for the young driver of the fourth Gibbs Toyota.  Last year’s champion, Joey Logano, finished fifth in the standings with his fifth straight top-six finish at Homestead. Youngster Daniel Hemric won the 2019 Rookie of the Year award.

The final Championship 4 race at Homestead provided the same kind of racing the 1.5-mile track has built a reputation for over nearly two decades. Despite the added downforce in this year’s Cup Series rules package and teams having no notes to fall back on since the track hosts just one race per year, drivers had options and lanes to choose from around the 1.5-mile track. As conditions changed when the sun set and additional tire wear took hold, it changed the dynamic even more in the closing stages of the race.

Kevin Harvick and his SHR Ford based their plan on racing after the sun went down.  The plan was foiled when fewer cautions did not give him time to move closer to the front.  The race ended on a long run.

“I only had a 25% chance anyway,” Harvick said.  “Three against one.  Those odds told me everything had to work perfect.  It did not, but we will see if we can’t be back next year with a faster car.”

It’s a short time until Daytona International Speedway has NASCAR teams running there for the 2020 season.  The rumor I hear is February 14, 2020.  It’s only 90 days.
