Martin Truex, Jr Dominates First Data 500 at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, VA – RIS- Martin Truex led 464 of 500 laps in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series First Data 500 on Sunday.  A dominating performance by Truex and close playoff racing led to an altercation between Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano post-race.  Logano survived to finish eight and Hamlin came in finish fourth.  Logano was called to the NASCAR trailer.

Overlooked was the sterling performance by William Byron who finished second and ran in the top five all day. Despite the competitive nature of the race, Byron remained in contention for the win most of the day.

In the end, it was quite a show, something the fans at the track and those watching on TV must have enjoyed. In the end, it was a dominating performance by Truex, something we haven’t seen at a short track.

Byron took it all in stride.  The 21-year old was asked if would have moved Truex going for his first Cup win and his answer was quite typical of this nature.

“Yeah, I mean, whatever it takes,” Byron said. “I wouldn’t race him dirty, but I’m really hungry for my first win, so it’s going to be whatever takes.”

The drivers now head for Texas Motor Speedway next week for the next chapter of the playoffs in 2019.
