Truex Wins Dover Cup Race From the Back at the Start

DOVER, DE – RIS – Martin Truex pulled away from the field in the final stages of the Gander RV 400 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race on Monday.  It was the second win of 2019 for Truex and the 21st of his career.  It is also the second win in the last three races.

JGR has seven wins in 11 races this season and has established itself as the team to beat. Truex, of Mayetta, New Jersey, has long considered Dover his home track and he crushed Bowman by 9.5 seconds after starting in the back of the field because of inspection issues.

"I promise it wasn't easy," said Truex about driving through the field. "It was a lot of work. It was tough. But this race car was just incredible. It's pretty special. I'm a really lucky guy."

Kyle Larson, who has struggled all season with bad luck, earned his best result of the season, coming home third. Kevin Harvick finished fourth, Chase Elliott fifth, Erik Jones sixth, Joey Logano seventh, William Byron eighth, Clint Bowyer ninth.  Kyle Busch finished 10th.

Logano led the final 13 laps of the opening segment, edging his Team Penske teammate Keselowski, to earn his fifth stage win of the season. Pole-sitter Elliott, who finished third, led the opening 107 laps but lost the lead on pit road when Logano and William Byron opted to take two tires while he took four. Larson finished fourth, followed by Harvick, Byron, Bowman, Blaney, Jones and Bowyer.

Truex took his first lead of the race on the final lap of the second segment and edged Bowman to post his first stage win of the season. Truex and Bowman each started from the rear after failing inspection multiple times on Saturday. Harvick finished third, followed by Elliott, Brad Keselowski, Larson, Ryan Blaney, Kyle Busch, Bowyer and Jones.

It’s become a running joke that Truex has many home tracks, but the New Jersey home is closest to Dover International Speedway.
