Logano Outruns Teammate Keselowski for Las Vegas Cup Win

LAS VEGAS, NV - RIS - Joey Logano had a big lead in the Pennzoil 400 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday but had to hold off teammate Brad Keselowski on the final lap to win.  It was the 2018 champion’s first win of the season.  It was his first win at LVMS and the 22nd of his career.

Logano led 86 laps to give Team Penske its second straight win after Keselowski’s Atlanta victory a week ago.

“Brad and I were so evenly matched,” Logano said. “To be so close and get it at the end there, it was fun.

“We’ve been so close to winning this race in Vegas for so long… we’re proud to be able to deliver.”

Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch rounded out the top five.

“I’d like to have one more lap,” Keselowski joked.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Aric Almirola, Martin Truex Jr., Chase Elliott and Denny Hamlin completed the first 10 finishers.

Harvick and Logano won the race’s first two stages.

Once he was able to take the lead away from Keselowski in traffic, Logano had to hold off his Team Penske teammate in the closing laps including a last -ditch effort coming out of Turn 4. Logano was able to fend off the charge and scored his win.

Kevin Harvick wo the pole for the race on Sunday and led 88 laps (most laps led by any driver).

The race was the first with the full-blown new Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series rules package. Cars remained bunched up closer together after restarts than previous Las Vegas Cup races, but overall drivers had to adapt to the new dynamics of the rules as the race wore on. Long green flag runs were obviously the order of the day and keeping mistakes to a minimum on pit road proved to be a determining factor for several drivers who may have made an impact at the front of the field.

“If we didn’t have the speeding penalty, we would have won this race,” Kyle Busch, who was pegged for speeding on pit road and had to work his way back from a drive through penalty.

The race had no cautions because of on-track incidents.  The only caution laps during the race were at the end of the stages. There were nine different leaders in Sunday’s race, which was vastly different from previous LVMS Cup races.  The race had 47green flag passes for the lead and 3,345 total green flag passes.  These statistics show they are the most ever at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Logano is now 35th on the Cup Series all-time win list tied with Terry Labonte.

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series now heads to ISM Raceway in Phoenix next Sunday.
