Brett Moffitt Wins Chicagoland Truck Race When Nemechek Runs Out of Fuel

JOLIET, IL – RIS – Brett Moffitt passed a faltering John Hunter Nemechek on the final lap to win the NASVCAR Camping World Truck Race at Chicagoland Speedway on Friday night.  Nemechek ran out of gas on that final lap, and Moffitt sped away to his third win of the season.

Ironically, Moffitt expressed doubt that his No. 16 Toyota would be a Chicagoland tonight.  At the last minute, sponsorship was found.

“We don’t have a lot of stuff or the most people, Moffitt said. But we have great people. We say it every week and it’s the truth. I have to thank Mark Cronquist. We are the lone Toyota engine out here. We got three wins now on the year. Thanks to JGR engines. Everyone just works hard. They’re passionate and that’s all that matters.”

Nemechek led 64 laps and finished seventh after leading most of the final stage which ended in the first turn of the 150th and final lap when his truck sputtered and slowed dramatically.

Ben Rhodes’s Ford was second for his fourth top-five finish of the season, and points leader Johnny Sauter was third. A four-time winner this year, Sauter rallied after falling from third to ninth because of jack malfunction during the final round of pit stops.

Pole-sitter Noah Gragson was fourth, followed by Brandon Jones and Justin Haley, the winner last week at Gateway outside St. Louis.

Nemechek took the first stage, and Gragson won the second.
