Kyle Busch Dominates the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Busch celebrates in Victory Lane

CONCORD, NC – RIS – Kyle Busch obliterated the field in Sunday night’s NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.  Busch led 377 of the 400 laps, leaving only 23 for the rest of the field, and he did it convincingly.  With the win, Busch becomes the first driver in history to win a points-paying race at every track on the circuit.  Busch now moves into sole possession of 15th all-time on the wins chart with 47. Next in line for Busch is Hall of Famer Herb Thomas with 48 and Tony Stewart with 49. Richard Petty holds the all-time wins record at 200 wins.

Martin Truex Jr. finished second after two pit road penalties. Denny Hamlin placed third to make it a 1-2-3 finish for Toyota. Brad Keselowski, in a Team Penske Ford, placed fourth. Jimmie Johnson, driving a Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, finished fifth.

Busch started the race on the pole and swept the stages. The No. 18 Toyota team entered the race with the points lead and two stage wins on the season and more than doubled their green-and-white checkered total by the end of the night.

Kevin Harvick started the race from the rear of the field after failing to make a qualifying run but was able to climb into the top five 68 laps into Stage 1. Unfortunately for the series leader in wins, Harvick blew a tire and hit the wall with less than 20 to go in the stage. He was forced to bring his No. 4 Stewart Haas Ford to the garage, ending his day.  Harvick was gunning for a third straight win this month, but it was not to be.

Despite Busch’s runaway win, plenty of hard and close racing could be found throughout the field. Besides favorites Busch and Harvick, Joey Logano, suffered damage in a tangle with Hamlin and Johnson.  Ryan Blaney had a spectacular engine failure at Lap 280, when his car burst into flames.  Blaney was unscathed, but a promising day was ruined.  Blaney had engine woes from early in the race.  Kyle Larson had an up-and-down day going from the rear to the font several times.

NASCAR’s longest race featured a pre-race salute to the military which drew a large crowd.  Everyone got their money’s worth on that alone.

The drivers and teams now head to Pocono, Pennsylvania next Sunday, June 3rd.  Blaney is the defending champion and is expected to do well, but probably not as well as Kyle Busch on this night. Tonight, only Logano (12), Hamlin (9), and Keselowski (2) led laps Busch did not.

KEVIN HARVICK, No. 4 Mobil 1/Busch Ford Fusion - Finishing Position: Retired after hitting the wall on Lap 83 -ANY INDICATION WHY THE TIRE WENT DOWN?“No, we stood in the garage and looked at it and I can’t tell if we ran something over. There’s enough things that could have happened right there, but I’m just really proud of everybody on our Mobil 1/Busch Ford. The car was really, really fast. We came all the way through the pack and made it up into the top three there and sometimes those things happen. I can’t complain about anything that’s happened this year. We have to take the good with the bad. The guys did a great job in basically guessing at where the car needed to be today with all the penalties, no practice and starting in the back. To come out and have the fastest car again was quite an honor to drive and they’re doing a great job. It was just bad luck.”

WAS IT JUST A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL YOU GOT THE LEAD? “Traffic was pretty tough. Getting through traffic you had to really pick-and-choose your lanes, but our car could go in multiple lanes and we were able to really make ground the second half of those runs, so it was fun to come up through there.”

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY CAMARO ZL1 – Involved in an on-track accident on lap 115 - WHAT HAPPENED IN THE FIRST ACCIDENT THAT ULTIMATELY PUT YOU IN THE GARAGE? “We just were really loose and just trying to make the top work. I just got loose, the car came around and hit the wall and then we had a bunch of damage. It started rubbing on the tire and then it wasn’t rubbing on the tire, it was cleared, but it just felt like something broke going into (Turn) 3 and we just hit the wall again and then we had an electrical issue. Unfortunate, but we will go to Pocono and figure it out there.”

RYAN BLANEY, No. 12 PPG Ford Fusion - Finishing Position: Retired on Lap 279 due to mechanical issue - “We had a cylinder let go maybe around lap 150 and we were just trying to limp it home. When they go that early you don’t expect it to last all race, but it lasted a lot longer than I thought and then it finally let go into one there. That stinks. I thought we had a really good car. I would have liked to see how the race would have progressed for us, but we won’t see that anymore. Hopefully, we can go out and have a good run at Pocono and then at Michigan.

WHAT ABOUT THE FIRE IN YOUR CAR AND HOW DIFFICULT WAS IT TO GET OUT? “It looks worse than what it is. It gets hot. You can’t see anything. That’s one of the biggest things is you can’t see where you’re going, but it looks a lot worse than what it is. The safety stuff keeps the fire away from us.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S PATRIOTIC CAMARO ZL1 – Finished 5th- HOW DO YOU ASSESS THE IMPORTANCE OF HOW GOOD THIS TOP FIVE FINISH FEELS? -“It feels good, but damn I want to win. I’m tired of running fifth, I’m tired of running whatever it is. We got off on some adjustments today and it was amazing how sensitive the car was with some minor adjustments the car just lost half a second. We had a hard time trying to grasp it and understand it and communicate about it. We put it back to the way it was and it took off and I drove right back up into the top three. Just a very small sweet spot with the car. Luckily, we finished in that sweet spot and got a good finish out of it, including a spin and we had a jack break on a stop. We had to overcome a lot tonight. Really proud of these guys. Wish that I could have got this special paint scheme into Victory Lane with the soldier we were carrying on the car today.”

JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 MCDONALD’S CAMARO ZL1 – Finished 6th- GOOD RUN FOR YOU HERE AFTER AN EVENTFUL NIGHT: “Yeah, I don’t know what was wrong with the tires we had two sets that they felt loose like it shook so bad that I pitted that one time under green and then we had a real short run and I had to pit again. I was just positive they were loose, but they said there was nothing wrong, but it was shaking so bad I mean I was scared so I went ahead and pitted. But, we had a really good car and we’ve come a long way, especially the Chevy’s from the beginning of the year 1.5-miles. I think in less than a month we will contend to win. That is a good feeling.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 DC SOLAR CAMARO ZL1 – Finished 7th- “I’m bummed I gave up some track position when I got into the wall, but I was glad to see our team stay with it and come back for a top-10 finish tonight. Our DC Solar Chevy was pretty good all night, but we had to adjust on it throughout the race to stay ahead of some vibrations in the rear of the car. We had a shake to start the race, and I think that’s what upset me when I got into the wall, but we were able to work around it. This hasn’t been a great race for me, so glad to see us come away with a good finish tonight.”

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 88 NATIONWIDE PATRIOTIC CAMARO ZL1 – Finished 9th- NICE TOP 10 FINISH. IS THIS MAYBE A LITTLE MOMENTUM FOR YOUR GROUP? - “Yeah, for sure, to qualify 27th and finish ninth it was definitely a good night. I feel like it was way more pit crew than anything. My pit crew they killed it on pit road all night. They did a great job and got us a couple of spots on that last green flag stop. Extremely proud of those guys. Greg (Ives, crew chief) made good calls from on top of the box and our car was much better than it had been all week. Happy for that. I really like this place, so hopefully when… well I guess we are coming back to the ROVAL, so it doesn’t really matter, but hopefully next year we run a little better here.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS PATRIOTIC CAMARO ZL1 – Finished 11th- “Thought we were better than we have been lately, which is nice. I just hit the wall towards the end and it ended up costing us, I think, the finish we deserved.”

TY DILLON, NO. 13 GEICO MILITARY CAMARO ZL1 – Finished 21st- “I’ve been telling everyone all season that we’re constantly growing and improving as a race team, and we certainly showed everyone that this weekend. We had speed on Thursday and had our best qualifying effort of the year. We worked hard in practice on Saturday and felt really good about our chances in the race. There were definitely challenges throughout the night, but it was a good race for us in comparison to other mile and a half tracks we have run this year. I ran on the lead lap for most of the night, even battling back to get our lap back in Stage 3, and our GEICO Military Camaro ZL1 had a pretty good balance under the lights. There is obviously still more work to be done, but we’re going to keep digging and getting stronger every week.”

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 M&M’s Red White & Blue Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing - Finishing Position: 1st- How special is winning this race for you? “This one’s very special. I don’t think there’s anything that can top Homestead, just with the meaning of what the championship is, but the Coca-Cola 600 – I’ve dreamt of this race since I was a kid and being able to win this race. Always watching the All-Star race and then the 600 the following weekend and being able to come out here and now win the Coca-Cola 600 is just phenomenal. It’s a little boy’s dreams come true and man, I just want to say that I thank NASCAR, for one, for giving me a chance to come out here and have this opportunity to race for my dreams and to accomplish those things. I don’t know if it’s ever been done before, but the first one to check off all the tracks and get it all done. I don’t want to go to any new ones. That would just have to start the whole process over, but holy moly, I can’t say enough about M&M’s. Love the red, white and blue scheme and what it means. All of our heroes, whether they’re fighting for us right now or whether they’re fallen heroes, certainly want to give remembrance to (SGT) Eric Toth who’s with us and who is riding on our car tonight and his family who are with us here this weekend. That’s very very special. Appreciate NASCAR doing that with NASCAR Salute the troops. Can’t say enough about M&M’s Red White and Blue, Interstate Batteries. This Toyota Camry was awesome tonight. Adam Stevens (crew chief) and all my guys are just phenomenal to work with and it’s so much fun right now. This NOS Energy Drink is going to keep us rolling for a long time tonight, that’s for sure. Also want to thank Cessna and Rheem and DVX Eyewear. Of course the fans. The fans for coming out here and supporting us all through all this. Man, Black Clover, DVX Sunglasses. I don’t know who else I’m forgetting. I’m sorry. Man, this is so huge.”

How does it feel to get your first win in a points event at Charlotte Motor Speedway? “It feels amazing. Man, there’s no greater feeling than winning this race. I’ve dreamt of this race since I was a kid and being able to come and get to victory lane with the Coca-Cola 600 is just awesome. I can’t say enough about M&M’s Red White and Blue. Everybody on this car. Adam Stevens (crew chief). All my team. Everybody that’s done such a phenomenal job of preparing such a fast race car. It was glued to the race track anywhere I wanted to go, she wanted to go, so that was really awesome. You don’t have cars like that very often. Really want to thank Interstate Batteries, Toyota, NOS Energy Drink, Cessna, Rheem, DVX Eyewear, Black Clover and of course, the fans. It may have been a little unaction-packed at the front of the field, but I tell you what, it was plenty exciting with nerves from my vantage point and certainly want to give a shoutout to Rowdy Nation and everybody that’s pulling for us all the time and don’t take no crap from all the haters and everything else. You guys are awesome. This one is for all of us.”

Your team came through flawlessly tonight, didn’t they? “Yeah, my guys were on it tonight. They were certainly really really good on pit road. I can’t say enough about my crew. They’ve been that way all year long. You know a lot of wins are due to a lot of circumstances going right and certainly we’ve got the pit crew going right with us right now. Fast race cars as well too. There were a few other fast cars out there I was keeping my eye on as they were coming up through the field. The 4 (Kevin Harvick) for one, the 78 (Martin Truex Jr.) for another and it just seemed like they could never really get into our territory, but you know all in all just a phenomenal night.”

First driver in the modern era to win at every active track, what does that mean to you? “It’s awesome. I mean I’ve dreamt of that – not only winning here and winning the Coke 600 as a kid and being in victory lane here for this race, but to just be a force that people got to be reckoned with, you know. I go across the country and race Super Late Models because I want to win at every single race track. I just want to show that there is no weakness. My guys have given me that chance here tonight and being able to get to victory lane with this M&M’s Toyota – it sure looks pretty in victory lane here tonight. I definitely want to give a shoutout to all of our men and women, all the service men and women across the world past and present, fallen and of today’s heroes – we had (SGT) Eric Toth with us here and his family riding along with us this weekend, so that was a pleasure. Got to meet up with them earlier and spend some time, so that was really cool.”

KEVIN HARVICK, No. 4 Mobil 1/Busch Ford Fusion - Finishing Position: Retired after hitting the wall on Lap 83 - ANY INDICATION WHY THE TIRE WENT DOWN?“No, we stood in the garage and looked at it and I can’t tell if we ran something over. BRAD KESELOWSKI, No. 2 Stars Stripes and Lites Ford Fusion - Finishing Position: 4th - “I thought the 78 was really strong, him and the 18 were probably pretty close. I don’t know, he had some kind of issues that kept holding him back, but they were just in another league. I ran as hard as I could tonight and the team did a great job the last few stops to put us in a position and that was just kind of what we had. We’ll go back to the drawing board and try to find some more speed. If we keep this execution that we had tonight, then we’ll get some wins, but we’ve got to have more speed.”

CLINT BOWYER, No. 14 Haas 30 Years of the VF1 Ford Fusion - Finishing Position: 12th - “It’s frustrating. You come here and it’s a long race, and what a weird race. It was like we had track position and cars were way back and laps down and then all the wrecks opened the door for them to get the laps back. Then we lost track position on tires there and kind of halfway got it back, but it was just a frustrating weekend altogether, really.”

ARIC ALMIROLA, No. 10 Smithfield Ford Fusion - Finishing Position: 13th - “We just missed it. The first half of the race was pretty good for us and then we missed an opportunity to pit there when we kind of stayed out on older tires and we were one of the last couple cars on old tires, and we went from running in the top five or six to finishing that third stage in 17th and then that’s kind of the end of the night. That last run went green, so I hate it. We had extra tires laying in the pits, but they didn’t do us any good.”

RICKY STENHOUSE JR., No. 17 Fastenal Ford Fusion - Finishing Position: 10th - “I’m real happy. I think we were a little concerned, even though the package wasn’t the same as the All-Star Race, I feel like we made some gains for the mile-and-a-half program this year. I felt like this is about where we were last year at this time, so for us to start the year off from where we did last year, I feel good that we’re headed in the right direction. It’s never as fast as you want. It was a tough battle for us out there. We were really good the first two stages and made an adjustment and was off for two runs – a full stage and had to fight back to get that track position. All in all, it was a good day to come back.”

MATT KENSETH, No. 6 Wyndham Rewards Ford Fusion - Finishing Position: 17th - “It was a struggle all night for us. I guess we finished about where we qualified. I thought we were about a 20th to a 22nd-place car most of the night. We finished a little better than that, but maybe it’s a small step forward since Kansas. We still have some work to do. I feel like I’m trying to get up to speed as quick as I can. I’m still behind a little bit, so hopefully these next couple of weeks we’ll be able to get caught up and keep improving.”

KURT BUSCH, No. 41 Monster Energy Ford Fusion - Finishing Position: 8th - “We just didn’t do anything spectacular tonight. We had one really good restart, but we were positioned for restarting fourth. We struggled on pit stops the first half of the race, but the second half they cleaned them up and we kept up with the track as best we could. We just didn’t have any short-run speed that was stellar. We didn’t have any long-run speed that was stellar. We kind of just did everything as a top-10 team would do and I’m glad we got eighth. We’ll have to keep fighting.”

DAVID RAGAN, No. 38 MDS Transport Ford Fusion - Finishing Position: 25th - “I hit the wall in that third stage and that really set us back. I felt like we were battling for the lucky dog and running right around the top 20 and the car just started getting loose so we were ready to make an adjustment. I got loose into three, hit the wall and had to pit under green. I was a little disappointed that I let the car get out from under me like that and probably cost us a shot at a top 20, but we made little improvements on our car all night and we just have to clean our act up a little bit.”

MICHAEL MCDOWELL, No. 34 Dockside Logistics Ford Fusion - Finishing Position: 18th - “It was good. We made the car better every stop, which is important, and obviously qualifying in the back kind of hurt us in that first stage, but I was able to get the lucky dog and just fight hard all night. I’m pretty happy with that. I feel like maybe we could have gotten a couple of spots better, but we’ll keep fighting hard.”
