Indianapolis - RIS - May 18, 2018 - Light rain moved over the Indianapolis Motor Speedway a little after 4:00pm.  Even though the track went back green after about ten minutes, most teams packed it up for the day.

All 35 entries were on the track today testing for the first time with the added horse power for qualifications.

Marco Andretti had fast time for the day at 231.802, worth a cool $10K to the third generation driver, but that speed was with a big tow. He was followed by Robert Wickens, and Ed Carpenter.

Fast times without a tow were three of the Penske cars with Will Power leading the way, followed by Josef Newgarden and Simon Pagenaud. The fourth Team Penske drive Helio Castroneves, was 10 on the no tow list.

The only incident yellow we had for the day was for hard contact by James Davidson when he  slammed the turn two SAFER barrier.

Tomorrow, Bump Day, by the new era qualification system, will start at 8:00am with a 30 minute practice session done in two groups, followed by a 30 minute all skate session at 9:00am.

Qualifications start at 11:00am to establish the 33 car field. Then the Saturday times get erased and they re-qualify on Sunday for their grid spots.

The fastest 9 nine cars on Saturday get a shot at the Sunday battle for the pole of the Indy 500.

This is an amazingly close field. The 35 cars on track today were separated by only 0.88 seconds, about 3/4 of the length of a football field.
