INDIANAPOLIS GRAND PRIX - Practice Begins at Indy for the Grand Prix of Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS - RIS - May12, 2017 - It is opening day for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Indy Car Season. Practice and qualifications are on tap for the INDYCAR Grand Prix with the race tomorrow afternoon. Then Monday, practice for the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race will commence with the rookies at noon and open practice at 2:00.
Today’s first Grand Prix practice started on the road course, under a cloudy sky with a cool temperature. Will Power set the pace with a 1:09.3172 lap followed by Scott DIxon, and Josef Newgarden. All 22 entered cars turned laps in the session.
The second period got underway and like the first, Will Power was the class of the field. The Penske team of Power, Newgarden, and Montoya grabbed the first three spots in the session.
The Indy GP is running with a very abbreviated schedule, with the two practice periods followed by a 15 minute pit stop session with the official qualifying at 4:20 this afternoon.
2016 Indy 500 winner, Alexander Rossi and Penske’s Simon Pagenaud had a little on-track disagreement as Rossi felt he was squeezed by the Frenchman coming out of the pits on his first set of reds, the alternate tire from Firestone. As the two moved down the Hulman straight Rossi, hand in the air, no doubt waving “Bonjour” to Simon, put a chop job on the Penske Dallara, as the two drove into turn seven, touching wheels. Rossi was clearly not happy. Both did maintain control and will probably continue the discussion later.
