A New Unser Triumphant at Indy
A NEW UNSER TRIUMPHANT AT INDY
Robbie Unser Joins Andre Ahrle to win the SVRA's Indy Legends Charity Vintage Pro/Am
INDIANAPOLIS -RIS- (June 18, 2016) The Unser family - Al, Al Jr., and Bobby - has taken nine victories on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's famed 2.5-mile oval. Today, Bobby's son Robbie joined the ranks of Unsers Victorious at Indy, this time on the 2.43-mile road course.
Unser joined Andre Ahrle in the seat of his 1965 Cobra CompR 427 sports car in today's running of the Indy Legends Celebrity Charity Vintage Pro/Am, staged by the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association's Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational on the IMS 2.43-mile infield road course.
The Unser/Ahrle duo completed the 25-lap pro/am event ahead of the hard-charging 1965 Mustang GT350 combo of Gary Moore and Paul Tracy.
Ahrle/Unser led the Class 6AP finishers, while Moore/Tracy led the 6BP class.
The #37 of Clair Schwendeman and Richie Hearn rounded completed the 45-minute timed race, bringing home the 1968 Corvette roadster in third overall, second in the 6AP classification
The Indy Legends ProAm Charity race pairs 33 veteran Indy 500 drivers with amateur racing partners in classic Cobras, Corvettes, Camaros and Mustangs in a timed race on the IMS road course during the four-day SVRA Brickyard Vintage Indy Racing weekend.
The pro drivers are paired in equipment, sized to best fit the the amateur's seating position. The race starts with the amateur in the car, and duos are required to make at a five-minute minimum pit stop for a driver change.
This isn't a race where these vintage warhorse cars are babied. Pro or amateur alike, these drivers still see the "red mist" as they compete fender-to-fender.
Since its debut two years ago, the Indy Legends ProAm Charity race has raised over $100,000 for local charities, and remains one of the most-popular events during the Brickyard Invitational weekend.
