NHRA Carolina Nationals Report

(CONCORD, NC – SEP 20, 2015 – RIS)

Sunday Report – NHRA Carolina Nationals

(CONCORD, NC – SEP 20, 2015 – RIS) The final round of competition started out with a bit of a bang when Dave Connoly red lit at the line and then Doug Kalitta's engine sprayed oil on the top end. In the second pair, Leah Pritchett easily beat Pat Dakin when Dakin's engine let go about the 330 foot mark for the day's second oil down in only two runs.

The oldest man competing in Top Fuel, Chris Karamesines, staged next to 'Sarge' – Tony Schumacher in the next pair but dropped power about half track, handing the win to Schumacher at 3.844 after both scored identical 0.099 reaction times.

Brittany Force and Larry Dixon staged next, with Force and Dixon both smoking the tires in a pedal fest, with Dixon driving around a slowing Force to take the round win. "I bet I can catch her," said a very happy Dixon McMillen's .066 reaction well ahead of Brown's .0

Antron Brown and Terry McMillen lined up next, with McMillen's 0.066 reaction well ahead of Brown's 0.098 but the Amalie Oil car's engine suffered a major explosion about the 330 foot mark, handing the win to Brown and requiring a long cleanup.

Following the day's third oildown, Shawn Langdon and J.R. Todd paired up with Langdon striking the tires almost at the start and falling back. Todd's tires lit up farther down the track but Langdon was already coasting to the turnaround, handing Todd the round win.

The final pair resulted in the best side-by-side of the round, with Steve Torrence winning over Richie Crampton by eleven thousandths of a second at the line, including a reaction time edge of three thousandths.

Funny Car's first round matched Alexis DeJoria and Tim Wilkerson. DeJoria ran 4.107 for her best time and Wilkerson smoked the tires at the hit of the throttle, slowing to a pass of only 8.049/97.48 to DeJoria's 4.107/301 pass.

Dave Richards and Del Worsham lined up next, with Richards lighting the tires and Worsham's 4.120/304.94 easily taking the win.

Bob Gilbertson and Tommy Johnson Jr lined up next. Gilbertson had a huge fire in Saturday's qualifying round but Johnson was quick qualifier. Gilbertson's crew had problems lining up the car, both cars pedaled and Johnson took the win easily over Gilbertson.

Tony Pedregon and Ron Capps staged up next, with Pedregon doing his usual short burnout before both drivers had to pedal repeatedly. Pedregon headed Capps all the way to the eighth-mile mark, but Capps took the win when Pedregon's engine popped about half track, allowing Capps to take the win, even though only

Robert Hight and Shane Westerfield matched up next, with Westerfield parlaying a 4.269/252.95 to 4.371/277.20 for a tire-smoking Hight to take the upset in his first ever nitro funny car round win.

Tribute to Jeff Gordon car driver John Force lined up against John Hale's Oberto Beef Jerky car with Hale pedaling at mid-track to give Force the round win.

Cruz Pedregon and Matt Hagan lined up for the next pair with Hagan driving around Pedregon for a win at 4.119/303.78 after Pedregon's car hazed the tires on its way to

Courtney Force and 'Fast' Jack Beckman made the final pair with Beckman losing with smoking tires as Force ran to the fast time of the round at 4.086/305.63 to Beckman's 9.391/58.24.

Pro Stock's first round paired Vincent Nobile against Drew Skillman. Nobile took the run when Skillman fouled by a scant 0.002 on the line to hand Nobile the round win. Greg Anderson downed Baron Stroupe, in spite of Stroupe's 0.005 reaction. Shane Gray's reaction of 0.060 was enough to beat Kenny Delco but he added to the margin with a quicker ET and higher top speed, 6.578/211.10 vs. a 6.640/208.52 for Delco.
Larry Morgan had no problems with beating Andrew Laughlin to advance, while Bo Butner and Allen Johnson won their pairings to meet in the next round and Erica Enders Stevens beat V. Gaines to pair with Chris McGaha after Jonathan Gray lost to McGaha.

Top Fuel second round first pairing was Antron Brown against Steve Torrence, with Brown's Matco Tools rail easily beating Torrence when Torrence smoked the tires off the line, 3.823/314.90 to no real time recorded. This was the second best pass of the day so far.'Sarge' and Doug Kalitta lined up next, with Schumacher's 3.865/318.92 beating out Kalitta's 3.998/298.54 to advance. This set up a match between Schumacher and teammate Brown in the next round.

Leah Pritchett and Larry Dixon made up the next pair, Pritchett took the win when both hazed the tires, 4.095/271.66 vs. 4.147/241.71.

J.R. Todd and Clay Millican finished Top Fuel in the second round, with Todd/s 3.929/290.21 beating out Millican's 4.073/261.93 as both cars finished the pass with only seven cylinders firing.

Fuel Funny Car lined up next with Tommy Johnson trying to extend his string of good weekends. Courtney smoked the tires at the hit of the throttle, giving Johnson's 4.095/302.08 the win over her 6.139/146.88. Shane Westerfield and Alexis DeJoria lined up but Westerfield's engine popped about half track, handing DeJoria the win at 4.123/305.49 over his 6.285/110.99 pass. Del Worsham and Matt Hagan faced off for the next pair, with Hagan smoking the tires and Worsham advancing with a 4.325/290.69 pass over Hagan's much slower lap. Final pairing of the round saw John Force and Ron Capps matched up next with Force taking the win by a couple of lengths, 4.143/305.49 vs. 4.209/275.06 with a couple of cylinders dropped late in the pass.

Pro Stock second round matched local Shane Gray against Larry Morgan with Morgan and Gray both pedaling and fighting tire shake but Morgan getting to the finish line first at 8.170/180.25 vs. 8.236/180.33. "I guarantee you I nuked the clutch" said Morgan after the pass. Second pair matched Bo Butner and Allen Johnson but Butner's car sagged, giving Johnson the win at 6.626/210.26. Champ Erica Enders Stevens and Chris McGaha were next on the line, with Erica taking the advantage off the line with a .029 reaction and 6.588/210.67 over 6.620 for McGaha. Greg Anderson and Vincent Nobile made the final pair in Pro Stock, Nobile took the advantage off the line at .018/6.611/210.05 to beat Anderson's low ET of the round but still got to the finish line first with a clocking of .071.6.587/211.63.

Exes Jerry Savoie and Angelle Sampey led the Pro Stock Motorcycles off with Savoie winngin at 6.872/195.56 over a 6.973 for Angelle. Redell Harris and past champ Matt Smith Harris eased out on Smith at the light but lost by 6.918/192.52 to 6.990/191.08. Current class champion Andrew Hines and Steve Johnson left almost even but Hines pulled out to a 6.888/194.86 over 6.920/193.63 victory. Final pair matched LE Tonglet and Eddie Krawiec and Tonglet took a .014/6.922/195.08 pass to win over Krawiec's .055/6.920/104.58 effort.

Semi-Final Round: PSM headed the semi-finals, with Jerry Savoie and meeting reigning champion Andrew Hines but Savoie left a thousandth early to lose to Hines' 6.928/193.10. LE Tonglet and Matt Smith lined up for the second pair in semis, with only .005 between them and Smith taking the win at 6.961/189.68 over 7.145/162.96 for a slowing Tonglet.

Pro Stock paired Vincent Nobile and Larry Morgan with Nobile taking the win at 6.599/210.28 vs. 6.641/209.30 after a reaction of .024 quicker than Morgan. Erica Enders Stevens and Allen Johnson made the final pair in Pro Stock, Johnson taking the edge on the light at .010 vs .031 but Erica drove around Johnson to win at 6.586/320.31 vs. 6.611/209.59 for a margin of victory of only four thousandths of a second at the finish line.

In the Funny Car semi-final, John Force and Del Worsham took their burnouts first, with a last-minute adjustment by Force's team. Force lost with a 4.148/303.03 to Worsham's 4.138/297.28 with a cylinder out. Top qualifier Tommy Johnson Jr and Alexis DeJoria drove down the track next with DeJoria's .025 reaction time wasted when her tires smoked off the line on the way to an 11.537/82.99 against Johnson's 4.118/299.13 pass.

Top Fuel matched teammates Tony Schumacher and Antron Brown, one-two in the points, in the first pair. 'Sarge' smoked the tires at the hit of the throttle giving the final round spot to Brown at 3.853/311.85. Leah Pritchett and J.R. Todd staged next, with Todd taking the win for the Jimi Hendrix Foundation car at 3.848/312.21 after a reaction time of .059 to Pritchett's quicker reaction of .043 and a lap of 3.878/309.49. This set up a pairing between Todd and Brown for the finals in Top Fuel.

Final Round: Matt Smith and Andrew Hines staged their bikes but at the start, Hines left with a reaction of only .007 to Matt Smith's .150, essentially ending the race right there as he went on to a 6.880/195.11. "I won here in the spring at the Four Wide and that was my 39th win and it has taken us all this time go get back and get win No. 40," Hines said. "That tells you how tough it is out here. I'm not quite certain why, but zMax Dragway has been kind to me," Hines said. "The first three or four times here I never got past the first round. My Harley V-Rod was running straight and true and putting up big speeds and it has done it consistently. We've had to figure out how to get a win on a tricky track but everything played out in our favor. We took a chance and changed a bunch of parts on our engine at mid-season looking for more power and consistency and it paid off."

Pro Stock finals had Erica Enders-Stevens against Vincent Nobile in the door slammers. Erica can leave the property with the points lead regardless of her finish, but she left before Nobile on her way to her third straight win, .012/6.582/210.97 against Nobile's .022/6.575/211.13. This is her seventh victory of the season, with five race dates left. "This is pretty incredible; it's pretty surreal," said Enders. "I feel like I'm in a dream. I don't know what I've done to deserve such a great group of guys. We have fun racing together. When I get in that car and close the door, there is not one single doubt that the car is prepared as well as it can be. It's just up to me to drive it right."

The Funny Car finals matched Tommy Johnson Jr and Del Worsham in their nitromethane-powered hot rods. Funny Cars and Top Fuel cars share basically the same engine: a 500 cubic inch billet aluminum block V8 with a giant supercharger forcing air and nitromethane fuel into the cylinders to produce over 10,000 horsepower. Worsham's reaction was .002 ahead of Johnson and he motored on to an .056/4.086/307.16 victory over Johnson's .058/4.119/300.93 pass down the thousand feet. Worsham's win is the first for a driver to win both nitro classes at zMAX Dragway.

Antron Brown and JR Todd moved their 300-inch wheelbase cars into the starting lanes for the final pro pass of the day. Brown drove into the points lead with a run of .037/3.832/311.56 over Todd's .044/4.063/286.32 pass. "It's pretty awesome when you look at that," Brown said. "J.R. has been racing longer in Top Fuel than I have. You never think about things like that. We've always talked about (racing each other) it in the final one day. We both threw down on the tree and it was a great race. It just shows you what this NHRA sport is about. When I was a kid I got to come to this sport and was able to see guys like Big Daddy (Don Garlits) and Kenny Bernstein. It gave me that ray of hope because I could see what they're doing because of all the access this sport offers. To be here racing in this sport so long, it is just a dream."

"When you come here, this is one of the racing capitals of the world right here in Charlotte," Brown said. "This track is a stadium. It reminds me of one of those old, old coliseums, like this is where all the people gather to wait for the battle to go down, like the gladiators.

"Once we got to the semifinals here today, we were like, 'All right, we've got to go up against 'The Sarge,' our teammate whose a tough competitor,'" Brown said. "We've been battling back and forth all year long. The thing about it was if he took us out and he won the race, it would be a 70-point swing, so that was the crucial round for us right there to keep the points close so we could stay in the battle with him."

In Funny Car, Del Worsham earned his first victory of the season and 27th of his career and vaulted into the points lead by outrunning event top qualifier Tommy Johnson Jr. in the final round. Worsham powered his DHL Toyota Camry to a 4.086 at 307.16 to finish in front of Johnson's Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger, which posted a 4.119 at 300.93. "Funny Car is extremely competitive right now," said Worsham, who also won at zMAX in Top Fuel during his 2011 world championship season. "With what the DSR cars have been doing, especially Jimmy Prock and Jack Beckman, leaving Sonoma I was thinking, 'What are we going to do?' We've made some changes, weren't complacent and the team has worked hard and we pulled it off. [Team owner] Connie Kalitta has given us the best parts. These are the races we are going to need to win if we're going to win the championship. I just want to be at Pomona and be in position to be the Funny Car champion," Worsham said. "I know there's only a short list of people who have pulled it off. I don't want to get that far ahead right now. We're looking forward to St. Louis."

The NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship continues next weekend with round two of the playoffs at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis.
