JoJo Helberg Dominant Despite Official SNAFU

IRWINDALE, CA -RIS- Jo Jo Helberg had everything going his way as he set quick time at a new track record, 13.791; 130.520 mph, won the trophy dash and the feature in the “King of the Wing” winged sprintcar event.

The checkered flags end the race, right?

Then after the checkered flag had fallen, controversy over the finish threatened to tarnish the victory. Race officials had mistakenly counted yellow flag laps toward the total of the 40 lap race and then in an effort to correct it the race was run again starting at the point where the scoring went wrong. The restart was on lap 28 with 13 laps remaining. Even that was confused as the initial word was that they would add eight laps to make up for the caution laps which were counted. Then they decided just to do everything over from the point of the scoring error and discard the final laps run under green.

While cars were prepared and brought back out onto the track the confused spectators began to leave and some booing was heard. As the race was restarted only a fraction of the crowd, officially 4273 remained. The outcome was not changed in the final laps though Sierra Jackson was able to close on JoJo in the final laps as he was forced to work his way through the backmarkers.

Helberg said after the race. “I thought it was supposed to be eight laps. That was a long eight laps.”

It was Jojo's night and a shame that the officiating took the spotlight from his exceptional performance. The new track record replaced a record set by Troy Regier in a supermodified back in 1999 of 15.14 seconds. The new record of 13.791 and 130.520 mph now make JoJo the holder of 7 track records. A native of California, Helberg had family and friends there to share the victory with. After a third place finish at Madera the night before Helberg had experienced engine problems and replaced the Chevy he considered his best engine with a older Mopar engine he considered 'old reliable' before the event.

Behind Helberg was Sierra Jackson. The 22 year old was having a good night after qualifying third and finishing second after her second place finish the previous night. Aaron Pierce came home third after a last minute engine change before qualifying helped him qualify second at 14.149 seconds.

Jacob Wilson, winner the night before at Madera was having a bad night after qualifying fourth and dropping out on lap 12.

The Hamilton family was well represented this night as series owner Davy, as well as his son Davy Jr. and his father Ken were in the field. Youth was served as Davy Jr. finished best of the bunch in ninth place. Davy Sr. dropped out on the 13th lap and Ken dropped out on lap 21.

The Western Speed team of Tim Skoglund and Cody Gerhardt had a disappointing night as Cody dropped out after the heat races while Skoglund finished seventh in the feature. By the way this team is run by the Gerhardts and yes, Cody's great grandfather was the builder of many Indy cars in the 1960's. The team has won with non winged sprintcars at Irwindale, Most notably a Turkey Night win with Tony Stewart behind the wheel.

MAVTV will air this and other King of the Wing series races on Christmas Day.
